No offense man, just pointing out what I see from those pictures.

LiquidTurbo 06-01-2010 06:24 PM

I got to play with the G11 today and I must admit, it feels really nice with the controls compared to the S90, where everything is hidden within menus.

threezero 06-01-2010 07:01 PM

does the S90 still have barrel distortion problem?

it is true that s90 have almost the same amount of setting at the g11 but it doesn't not have individual dials for each function, say iso. The dials and the flip viewfinder is what differentiate s90 and g11. That and the barrel distortion and the obvious size difference

Yes the s90 has barrel distortion, it has all the settings within menu but for example you can have the ring adjustment as aperture and the rotary dial on the back as speed, so technically yes you can set the ring control as different things.

Biggest diff between the g11 and s90 is the overall size, flipping screen, hot shoe and a viewfinder

These were taken on a D90, but with a DSLR and its ability to change lenses and body if u wish without the whole camera going to waste is definately a better choice.

Thanks for the help guys. I ended up going a totally different direction and bought a lightly used D40 off of CL. I was debating between the G11 and a D3000, but upon some research on the web I found that the D3000 was noisier (image wise) and slower to use than the D40.

I also read that the D40 is alot more sensitive to light due to the lower mp count on the sensor resulting in each pixel being more sensitive?

And yes, I'd most likely want to upgrade later on anyway, so going a used route and spending less also saved me a bit of money

You must have read Ken Rockwell? :haha:

Haha yeah, a number of people suggested I take a look through there

Good decision. I was thinking of getting a mid-level superzoom P&S camera as well, but ended up with an older Nikon D50.

The D40 isn't bad at all. I love mine.

The s90 also has a 3" screen vs 2.7" on the g11. You also forgot to mention that s90 has a F2 lens! My co-worker has the s90 and he tested it against the g11 and he said that g11 had harder time focusing in low light. It kept searching back and forth...

In the end it comes down to personal preference. But I think s90 does have better photo quality.

^ when I use my s90 I use it at f2.8 works a lot better

omg, that guy is retarded....lol! i take his reviews with a grain of salt.

another camera i would've considered would be the new Sony EVL series. it's new, but it seems to be pretty decent considering the sensor size for the price (and SLR lens capability).

i debated buying a smaller camera for more portability reasons as well. i love my friend's Leica X1, but i can't justify the cost. I then thought of the Leica D-Lux 4, but i didn't like the shot examples i saw over 400ISO (which is supposedly better than the Panasonic LX3).

anyways, good choice on buying an entry level DSLR. you might get hooked ;) happy shooting!

The X1 is so awesome, amazing quality! However, the battery life is terrible.

agreed, hence why my buddy bought a spare battery! hahaha, but yah, the accesories cost a lot as well. he bought a 'grip', a view finder, a small table tripod and also the matching bag....i think his X1 is now sitting around $3000 with all the add-ons...ouch!

can't beat the large sensor on the small body though. i believe it's a Nikon D300 sensor? (1.5 crop)

The sensor is made by Sony, and seems to be the same one as in the Sony A700 & Nikon D300...but I"m not sure if it's been made official.

Here's a pic of Muk Muk enjoying the X1:

LoL...You and your damn MukMuk fetish! :p

Leica Canada lent us an X1 for a few days, and we found it to be somewhat noisy. It was an early production unit, so maybe that's why...?

hahaha, i'll post up another few shots of Muk Muk with Leica gear when i get home (one with a Digilux 3 and another with a DMR) :)

i'm suprised it was a bit noisy! i thought that sensor would make up for a lot compared to those shots i've seen of the D-Lux4 shots (horrible about 400 iso).

Muk Muk for life!!
