How does your job work?

I thought it would be interesting to share how your jobs work. Shed some light as to what your job pertains, the mechanics/flow of your job and if or how it affects the people or community around you.

Employer: Coast Mountain Bus Company
Position: Farebox Receipt Attendant

Everyday, a truck and one of our staff members make trips to every bus depot to collect the mobile vaults which contain all the money collected from the bus. They are then delivered back to counting house for processing. Bus depots include Vancouver, Richmond, Surrey, Burnaby, Port Coquitlam, North Vancouver, and West Vancouver.

In a work week, we also have our own trucks which goes out to all the skytrain stations, including Canada Line. We do Canada Line 3 times a week and the rest of the skytrain stations 2 times a week. After the run, all the coins and bills are brought back to our counting house for processing.

All the coins are dumped into our vaulting area which are then carried up by a conveyor belt. As it reaches the top, it dumps onto an open table which are then pushed down by a staff member into a coin sorter. All the coins are sorted into their own appropriate bins and are then again dumped into their respective wrapping machines. As it wraps, the machine spits out the rolls and are carried by a conveyor belt to a wrapping area. All the coins are then packaged in boxes or sealed in plastic bags.

Bills are sorted by machines and are bundled by one of us.

In a day, the bill count can average about $80,000 to $150,000. Coins average about $250,000.
