Delay in shifting?
 

Asking for the benefit of a friend who owns a 2002ish (not entirely sure) Honda Civic. It is a 5 spd manual and has been his DD for a few years now... as of today, suddenly the car started experiencing a delay in shifting.

I tried googling the issue but am possibly just searching for the wrong things... Essentially the car doesn't realize that it has gone from 1st to 2nd, or any other gear for that matter, for a good 1-2 seconds before it engages.

Is it simply the transmission that's going? Or could it be something else?

What do you mean it doesn't realize it has changed gears. What does it do? What does it sound like?

^ Lol I know i had a hard time trying to word it..

For example... when shifting from first to second, after changing gears and releasing the clutch the car basically experiences a lag where it is still in neutral for a second or two even after the clutch is released before it catches the gear and realizes its in second.

Does that make a bit more sense? Lol

Nothing sounds unusual... no grinding or anything of the sort

clutch slipping, time for new clutch

yea seems like slippage... if you floor it up a hill in 5th or 4th does it rev up but your speed not increase?

I'll give that a try either tomorrow evening or friday morning... would that also be a sign of the clutch slipping?

Yea if it's that bad you should notice in a lot of different places. Usually in 5th with a load going up a hill or 4th is really noticeable though.

If you find that it is in fact slipping, tell your buddy to accelerate slowly after he gets it into gear and don't drive it hard. It's not a fix, it's just to get him by til he gets it to a shop and he should be going to a shop ASAP.

And I don't mean ASAP as in when he gets a couple of days off work and it's convenient. I mean ASAP as in now.

i heard one way to test is pop it in 4th or 5th gear and floor it

if the car doesnt move but rpm goes up, ur clutch is done

save the tow bill by not testing it yourself and go get it done asap, the clutch will probably be toast by the time you friend finishes testing

once determined problem straight to a shop to replace the clutch otherwise there is a chance to damage the flywheel.

Yeah the car is currently garage parked right now until we diagnose the problem... which won't happen probably until tomorrow evening as I work evenings and he's just finishing his practicum so he's teaching in the mornings.

If it is the clutch... everything should be replaced correct? As in the t/o bearing, pressure plate, disc..

Any recommendations on a shop to take it to? Preferably somewhere with a fair price... not looking for anything special or aftermarket simply OE
