BMW 3 LWB.....

Seems like China needs a LWB version of everything. How long before we see a Honda Fit/Toyota Echo LWB?

Are long wheelbase variants turning into a big trend in China?

Well, at least for the segment in which the 3-Series competes there, BMW feels the need to offer a long-wheelbase variant to go up against the successful Audi A4L - the extended wheelbase version of the A4 model.

BMW will be building the stretched variant of the 3-Series at a new plant in the Shengyang economic zone with its Chinese partner Brilliance Auto.

Long cars to make up for short ________ (fill in the blank)

Seems a bit odd to stretch a 3-series.

Wouldn't it be a lot easier to make a budget-oriented 5-series model? A 523i, for example? Maybe they're concerned about maintaining the upscale image of the 5- and 7- series.

Not sure if you guys know this, but my understanding is that in China most businessmen have chauffeurs. Therefore the owner is chilling in the BACK of the car. Hence the need for more back seat space. Anyone who's been to any major city in China (and probably elsewhere) knows this. BMW, Audi, and Mercedes all know this unique quirk of the Chinese. They'll have a ton of catching up to do though as almost every VIP-type car you see is an Audi.

Not everyone in the world wants to be a driver. For all we know, they're wondering why everyone in North America wants do something as strange as sit in the driver's seat. ;)

Not sure if you gus know this, but in my understanding 3 series are cheap as shit and most business men in China need to step their game up. Hence thats why theres a 5 series and 7 series. Anyone who knows anything about cars knows this.

TomBox_N 06-10-2010 05:21 PM
