Unfortunately it comes up to who else is in the draft class with them naslund will have to go against the likes of forsberg sundin etc. Bure was in a tough class and didnt make it initially he should make it next year though. While linden has a better chance with his class. "2011 features a weak class of first year eligible candidates. Ed Belfour headlines a group that also includes Trevor Linden, Glen Wesley, Derian Hatcher, Stu Barnes and Dallas Drake."

Tim Budong 12-15-2010 04:58 PM

Remember this, Trevor Linden was very well respected around the league as well

Linden + Bure get indicted together. everyone wins

end of discussion

Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Eric Lindros, Pavel Bure, Alexander Mogilny , John Leclair, Peter Bondra, Adam Oates, Theo Fleury, Guy Carbonneau, Dave Andreychuk, and Sergei Makarov.

these are the players that didnt make it recently and are in the ballot for it next year as well, max 4 get in per year. It looks really tough as a lot of good players are up for 2012 and 2013 aswell.

shawn79 12-15-2010 05:05 PM

A maximum of four players can be inducted in one year. The back-log of players that will comprise the 2011 ballot includes: Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Eric Lindros, Pavel Bure, Alexander Mogilny , John Leclair, Peter Bondra, Adam Oates, Theo Fleury, Guy Carbonneau, Dave Andreychuk, and Sergei Makarov.

gilmour nieuwendyk mogilny and oates will probably get in before bure does

Fact is this, the Canucks are FINALLY trying to build tradition as the organization has failed to do so for many years. The constant rebranding of this team really hurt the team over the past 40 years. Hell, no one knos if this blue/green will last for the next 5 years.

Regardless, my point has always been that these three were great for what they represent for the city. If this is how the Canucks decide to honor the tradition, than so be it. Keep in mind, this sorta act could lead to great things down the road. Let's say Cody Hodgson. The numbers in the rafters represent more than just numbers, it represents leadership. It tells a story to the newcomers on what it's like to be a Vancouver Canucks.

These qualities stand out amongst your regular guys that comes to the organization. It builds a team as the players in the room will learn to recognize what the greats of this organization has done for the city and the team within the city.

Of course, Linden or Nazzy getting into the HHOF as vancouver canucks would mean wonders for everyone in the city, but the HHOF has a different meaning compared to what it means ot have a jersey retirement.

The jersey retirement only has ties within the organization for newcomers to look up to

THIS.

Comparing one team's retired numbers to another is pointless. Retiring a jersey is something THE FRANCHISE does to honor what a player means TO THEM and THEIR HISTORY... what that player has or hasn't done with any other team is irrelevant. If it were, the Canucks should be retiring Mike Peca's number.

Those who don't think Smyl meant anything to the Canucks probably weren't even born when he played. He was as big a piece of the Canucks of that era as Linden was to his era. He's an integral part of the team's HISTORY, and that's what a jersey retirement is meant to honor.

Also true - look at the what Iginla and the Flames did his last game here. He was president of the Players' Association for years, definitely a stressful and thankless job.

I just view retiring numbers differently I guess. I agree the canucks players that have been retired represent the canucks organiztion and their history and should definately be recognized for that.Heck I respect them for that yet I have a strict belief that jersey retirements are for those who achieve greatness in the game that many cannot Orr, Grtezky etc. I feel many teams in many different sports retire people who shouldnt be retired because of this.

Bouncing Bettys 12-15-2010 05:45 PM

The Leafs were the first team in the NHL to retire a jersey. They have one of the longest histories and oldest identities in pro sports and they don't emulate how other teams honour their players. To be retired a Leaf, the player has to have received a career-ending injury or death while a current Leaf and have made a significant contribution to the team. For the rest, they "honour" the player's number with a banner but current players are still able to wear the same number.

Canucks should retired jerseys by their own definition and not worry about other teams standards - find a way to make it their own.
