working out and hockey at teh same time?

hey guys i'm just wondering how many of you guys play a sport and workout at the same time?

I'm currently working out and playing hockey 1-2 times a week. Right now, i'm finding it extremely difficult to play hockey hockey after a legs workout. It just feels i'm skating on mud and have no explosiveness at all.

I want to try the 5x5 workout but that involves squats 3x a week. Is there anyway that i can alleviate the soreness? What are some of the tricks you guys use to play and workout so that your game doesn't suffer?

if your working out you shouldnt be playing sports/doing cardio more the 3x a week and more then a half an hour each time..

I play hockey once a week and workout 2x a week. Only light cardio the day before or day of to loosen up. Squats 3x a week? Might work out for someone whose body can recover really fast or doesn't do any other sport at the same time but not for me.

Try taking some steroids. sHould help you recover faster. Just ask Barry Bonds. He'll admit to it.

i coudnt do squats 3 times a week even if i did nothing other than squats stretch and sleep. it takes like 4 days for my legs to be back to full usefull after i do legs.

Oh yes. Sly Stallone recommended that when he was making Rambo 69.

I try not to do legs the day before hockey. Time it out, so you do chest, back or arms the day before.

dim_sum 06-18-2010 12:08 AM

when i play hockey more than once a week, i usually just workout 2x and call it a week lol. It sucks because i really wanan gain some weight, but i dont' wanna stop playing hockey neither.

cdizzle_996 06-18-2010 05:37 AM

Im trying to gain weight too. Hockey works against us because you burn so many cals.

dim_sum 06-18-2010 09:06 PM

not to mention when your legs are sore... you can't skate as fast so you're less competitive lol

I do hockey about 3 times a week...and i am always at the gym the morning of.

Usually consists of a routine of 30 minutes on the bike, 20 minutes core, and 10 minutes of plyometrics.

i agree... i did p90x last summer but i also played volleyball and hockey all year round.
can not work out if u wanna play volleyball that's for sure. hockey I can manage working out and playing but it does slow you down.

BlacknJean 08-02-2010 03:59 PM

hockey is already like a leg workout anyway. the quads and shit

AndM 08-02-2010 04:24 PM

as for exercise, I don`t have too much advice. Make sure that u refuel and recover properly after u eat. Chocolate milk and a banana will do wonders for u both before and after exercise. No im not trying to be dirty lol. Also hydrate plenty after a workout so u don`t feel shitty before a game.

Stretch and do active recovery to reduce the DOM.

If you are concerned about your on ice performances, you need to start periodizing your workouts, if you have a game the next day it wouldn't be wise to good balls to wall on your workout.

waddy41 08-02-2010 06:52 PM

can't you just play hockey and avoid leg workouts until the season's over? I'm assuming you're not playing ice....

IMO the fit athlete look is way better than the bulky bodybuilder look anyways...

+1

If you don't want to suffer in hockey, you will need to plan your workouts around your games. Do light - moderate workout in the 2-3 days leading up to your game, and then do your heavy lifts the next day after your game.

I focus more on hypertrophy training when I'm trying to juggle the two. I also take more frequent breaks from the gym - every 4 weeks I take one week off. I usually do one week of heavy strength training, followed by 3 weeks of hypertrophy with mostly the same exercises.

It really comes down to what your body can handle. I end up over-trained very quickly If I do not take the frequent breaks.
