"Redeeming" your eyecare insurance

So I've been told that since I have eyecare insurance issued from my school (it's not much, $100-150 per year), I can use this money towards my eyeglasses.

However, I've got near perfect vision so I don't need any prescription glasses.

But I can use the $100-150 towards a pair of sunglasses by going into an optical centre and getting them to write up that value into a "gift certificate" so to speak and use it towards buying a pair of sunglasses elsewhere?

I'd love to take advantage of this since I've been paying this damn insurance for the last 4 years of post-secondary without using any of it, would be great if I could get something out of it.

Any insight is appreciated!

the proper term is "claim" lol

i'm not sure about other post-secondary schools but for SFU you should go HERE FOR INFORMATION and fill out and send in THIS FORM

i don't think non-prescription eye glasses are covered though, but eye exam fees are

1. purchase for X amount under "laser eye surgery, contacts, glasses etc"
2. receive gift certificate for X amount from optical centre instead?
3. take receipt
4. claim it

?

basically, u send your recipt to the insurance company that sfu uses, and they send a check back to u to be deposited in 2-3 weeks time.

i dont think is 1 year, i rmb for glasses is like 1 1/2 years or 2....

go to a chinese place and order sunglasses.

ask them to write it up as a prescription.

pay first then send recipt.
just ask the store if they can write up the sunglasses as eyeglasses/prescription for insurance purposes, they probably want to sale too.
not that im saying i did that for my sunglasses
*wink*GWL are u reading this? lol

Lol ok thanks for the insight guys.

I assumed it would be from an asian-operated optical centre, good thing I speak fluent cantonese and all.

And it works out for the business too since they're making business right.

Thanks again.

I got my money's worth lol.

I claimed prescription meds, an eye exam, but i always forgot to claim my glasses. Not to mention a current claim for a $2100 item. Oh and dental as well.

Thank you SFU/Sunlife.
