iPod touch 2g 4.0software

I updated my ipod touch 2g to 4.0 through itunes and its now stuck in recovery mode. I've tried to recover through itunes and I end up with 0*E800000A error in itunes. I've tried reinstalling everything already and through apple's website i've found it would cost me 130$ to ship it to apple. Is there anyway to fix this problem? or should I just give up on this ipod and go buy a new one or find one on craigslist

1) Get Linux (Ubuntu)
2) Learn how to use it to reflash IPods/IPhones
3) ???
4) Profit!

instead of shipping it, can't you walk it into your local Apple store?

PS: iOS4 for a 2G ipod touch runs slow, eats battery and is virtually a pointless update because its missing all the major features of iOS4.

edit: ^^ what he said.

Are you able to reload the firmware back onto your iPod Touch? Grab a copy of the iOS 4.0 ipsw, and put your device in DFU mode and try to reload the firmware again from iTunes.

Alternately you can try the Apple store like others have suggested and see if they can help.

EDIT: BTW, have you tried restoring it to say 3.1.3 to verify whether it's something wrong with the copy of FW you were using?

I've tried it on a mac, and it's updated to 4.0 no problem and everything works. However when I connect it to my pc itunes will once agian pop up the 0*E800000A error. I can't even set the ipod back into recovery mode to try and downgrade, I'll try that after work. I'm also bringing it in for a check at the apple store but they told me most likely I will be paying that 130$ since it's out of warranty.

Check out this link if you do decide to downgrade.

It talks about iPhone but as you know, it's pretty much the same with the Touch.
