Travelling to US - Personal Exemption

I'm travelling to the states for a week this month, and I know you get a personal exemption for tobacco/alcohol, does anyone know if you're allowed to bring more than the limit? and if so, how much duties have to be paid?

Only ONE of the following items can be imported both duty-free and tax-free:
1.5 litres (53 imperial ounces) of wine;
1.14 litres (40 ounces) of liquor;
a total of 1.14 litres (40$ounces) of wine and liquor; or
24 x 355 millilitre (12$ounce) cans or bottles (maximum of 8.5$litres) of beer or ale.

All of the following items can be imported both duty-free and tax-free:
200 cigarettes;
50 cigars or cigarillos;
200 grams (7 ounces) of manufactured tobacco; and
200 tobacco sticks.

This is after 48 hours

You CAN import more than that, but you'll be paying a ridiculous amount of taxes and duties... to the point where it's not worth it. It's really hard to know exactly what it adds up to... I've tried looking it up, but it's very difficult.

I directly asked a border patrol guy. I forgot how much extra tax you have to pay but it was to an amount where it was basically buying it in Canada. So I only brought back one bottle of alcohol. Don't try to bring more than one per person.

When I came back from Korea after a month, I went through and told them I was over the limit (the claim form thingie only asks if you're bringing back than your monetary or tobacco amount--booze is cheap as HELL there); so I filled in yes to over limit, NO to over $ and NO to over tobacco. The officer was confused for a bit, asked me why I filled it in like that, I said I was bringing back 5 or 6 bottles of rice wine, I got waved through no problems.

That having been said, I was lucky. Taxes on alcohol are really high coming back in.

i seem to remember that it was 100% duty or more (for alcohol) and like 160% for tobacco ... not certain though

thanks for all the info guys....sounds like its probably not worth it to bring back more than the limit...

Nope it's not. One per person or else you will get taxed and don't try to hide the other bottles if you do bring more back =P
