HELP: White spots on carbon fiber hood
 

I've recently bought this car and there are white spots on the CF hood, how do i fix this?

I can still see the pattern underneath the spots, what is causing this? So it should be fixable right?

prob needs a new clear coat

u sure it's in the paint?? or just on top..is there any spot that's lifting off?? it looks like the top coat slowly coming off, poor adhesion. has it been clear coated before?? you definately needs it to be clear coat again if so.

yea agree with the others looks like the clear coats peeling bodyshop should be able to fix it

Fail. Three people above you correctly identified it just needs the clear stripped and recleared. How about just not posting when you dont know the answer?

will products such as scratchX work on this? then i just polish and buff it up?

If it really does need a new clear coat, how much would that cost roughly?

Scratch-X will not work on that issue :( You can try doing a cut polish but it looks like there is a issue with the clearcoat!

As far as cost to re clear the hood i'd say about $300 to do the job right?

How deep is the whitening?
Are there bubbles deeper inside?

yea its definitely the clearcoat....seems like a cheap hood, but this is definitely due to poor manufacturing(poor prep. therefore poor adhesion)....if it is a brand name hood they usually come with a 1 year warranty

when it comes to cf hoods, all the different steps in making the hood really do matter.

different epoxy resins, different companies, different compounds, will either keep the hood the original cf color, stay clear, turn yellow, flake, flex, uv protection (this is what causes the turning of yellow), and allow the final clear coat to adhear to it better.

so if u see a cheap cf hood going for sale, chances are, it was manufactuered cheaply and may not last far too long.

i suggest bring it to a body shop to see if they can sand down the clear, and reclear the hood if u want to salvage it.

the clearcoat/ gel coating is almost ready to peel. You'll start to notice from here on that the clearcoat will flake off the car, especially w/ washing/ rain. The best thing to do is to get a clearcoat done ASAP. The longer you leave it, the quicker UV Light will penetrate the weak clearcoat/gel coating and damage the carbon fiber. It will also discolour it without proper protection.

ca couple shops up and get a quote for clearcoating a carbon fiber hood. Browse around the buy&sell forums on revscene.net and see if you can find a new/used one cheaper. Highly unlikely you'll find one at a better price then clearcoating but anythings worth a shot... GL
