I think I have provided enough information for someone with negotiation experience to offer some advice, or to tell me that I'm a complete idiot.

So basically your asking us for our opinions but don't trust us.

Anyhow it sounds to me like you need to learn what a low ball offer is 30% below asking at a dealer isn't a low ball offer. That's real world asking price.
So if you've agreed to a price now agree on an inspection and full disclosure of vehicle status. If all is up to snuff then get the thing if not negotiate further or walk away

Jgresch 07-28-2010 04:33 PM

^ Completely depends how much the vehicle is selling for/how mcuh cost is.. there are so many variables....

$2000 30% off=$1400
Which is reasonable..

$35,000 car 30% off= $24,500 you can't tell me thats not a low ball....

BlackZRoadster 07-28-2010 04:52 PM

lol OP basically wants the car for wholesale value,

1) you are not a broker, what makes you think u can get wholesale cost?
2) if you made an offer and its accepted, dont be a dick and back out.
3) doesn't matter what they make on the car, if you see value in it then buy it, if not continue looking

Tapioca 07-28-2010 05:03 PM

This has been a pretty humbling discussion - thanks for telling me that I've been a bit of a jerk through the whole process (seriously.)

Thanks to a few PMs, I have a pretty good understanding of where I stood, and what I should do now should I decide to have another go-around with the car.

Cheers.

You just gotta look at what else is out there, and what you're paying. If most of the similar cars are priced at $30,000 and you are paying $25,000 - you are getting a good deal. (that's the way I look at it)

Sometimes when a customer is in your situation (on the fence) it's because the vehicle isn't exactly what they want, and they are just settling for something, maybe because it's only one you can afford or it's the only one out there. Otherwise, if it was EXACTLY your dream car, you would be willing to pay more than it's true market value to get your hands on it.

Anyways, feel free to ask if you need help, there are lots of sales guys in here that are happy to help a fellow car enthusiast.

i'm glad the OP got his issue resolved, but from reading this post i have to say it reminded me of an episode of the simpsons where ned's left-torium was failing and home was making an offer on his gas grill.

The car was a trade-in and the dealer could have given wholesale, or maybe even 10-15% below wholesale - I don't know. But, I understand the "WTF" reaction because I really should have taken the time to figure out a price I was willing to pay. I was also carried away in the speed at which the negotiation was going as it's been a long time since I've purchased a car.

You obviously have never worked in a dealership. Wholesale is exaclty that. Wholesale. You pay retail, not wholesale. Businesses are in it to make money. Deal with it. You got %30 off without any haggling. That's crazy, and rarely happens.

I always get people come in to buy motorcycles thinking we have GIANT margin... as in $5k+ on a $12000 bike It's so silly. The average profit on a japanese sportbike is $500.

If I had a used bike marked up $3000 above wholesale I would make something decent. Now if someone came in and wanted to pay $3000 less that asking price, I make virtually nothing.

Do you go to work everyday and negotiate your wage?

obselete 07-28-2010 08:53 PM

OP sounds like a dick...... make up your damn mind

Rich Sandor 07-28-2010 08:55 PM

I think Tapioca has gotten the point.. we're just beating a dead horse now. :)

simsimi1004 07-28-2010 09:28 PM

after all this is done with mind us telling the
car, price, offer,?
getting curious.

Evolutionian 07-28-2010 09:32 PM

mang.. at my dealership we constantly get people coming in thinking all our new cars are marked up at least $3000! and when we tell them we dont have that much mark up and show them our gross profit sheet (the commission sheet that i get) they still dont believe you..

people need to get real.. as a sales person, we all understand shits are going up in prices, gas, food, taxes, etc. but that goes the same for cost for dealerships..

sigh..

Evolutionian 07-28-2010 09:36 PM

also if you offered 30% off, dealerships most likely losing money to get it out, and your still not satisfied, please let the sales person free, im sure someone will come into the lot, and happily buy that car at a more reasonable price.

vafanculo 07-28-2010 09:59 PM

Technically you entered into a verbal contract to buy the car. If you don't buy the car at negotiated price, don't bother heading back there again. They probably won't want to do business with you any longer. I know I wouldn't.

Just take this as a lesson learned for next time.
