How much do lot attendants make usually? I was at Dueck on Marine a couple days ago, saw a few young guys starting up cars, moving them. They looked like college students.

Moved from a dealer that guaranteed eight hours + if you produce over eight = bonus to just a pure flat rate dealer.. Holy fuck it is a completely different work environment. These guys are like fucking dogs constantly hungry for work. I'm just an apprentice so I was hourly at both shops but at my new dealer it's a really hostile environment since to them I am 'stealing' work from them. Anyone else have to deal with this shit?? question for you lot guys/valets?
if your ultimate goal was to enter the shop as an apprentice, how long did it take you to wait?
im not a tech, nor plan on ever becoming one.
my issue is that im having a hard time moving to a different position in the dealership when most want to keep me as the tower/dispatcher, especially when it affects their paycheque.
lesson learned, the more you take on, the more ppl expect you to keep doing it. especially if it means they dont have to do it anymore...

Posted via RS Mobile | Yep, and because of that it severely limits the extent of the work I'm allowed to do. Brakes? Forget that for an apprentice, it's gravy. Annual maintenance service? Gravy. Flushes? Gravy. Anything that would be an opportunity for a learning experience even though I diagnosed it and know how to do it? Nope, gravy. Greed runs straight flat shops. Quote:

Just my luck that someone left and they needed someone. Posted via RS Mobile |

Originally Posted by !SG if your ultimate goal was to enter the shop as an apprentice, how long did it take you to wait? | I did a special course in my grade 12 year that ticketed me for first year if i completed the level 1 ita test successfully (which i did). from there i ended up working at a dealer as a lot guy.
For my dealer i did part time for about 6 months doing 20hrs a week as a lot guy while i was in my last year of highschool and volunteering my saturdays at an indy shop. after highschool, i worked 4 months full time at the dealer trying to get into the shop. i probably bothered them every week to get in as an express technician, not even an apprentice LOL.
I left my position as a full timer to go work at a canadian tire as a tire installer, stopped volunteering saturdays, and instead worked as a lot guy on saturdays, just to keep my foot in the door. it wasnt until someone left the dealer that they finally got me in as a tire and lube tech..
Basically i was a lot guy for a year, a tire installer for 6 months, a tire and lube guy at a dealer for a year, and finally an apprentice now-- even though i had my level one training done when i started as a lot guy.
My teacher said it over and over again, its just about being at the right place at the right time. put yourself out there, try new places, and definitely keep in touch with all the places you do work at so youre only a phone call away when that time comes. I am an apprentice now because my SA at my old dealer became a manager at another and gave me a call. Quote:

My old dealer dispatch was the second man to the service manager when he was out of the building
btw.. heard a new audi dealer opening up on terminal from some coworkers + friend. anyone know any details?

as for chain of command, in my position, i am the fall guy for everything.
if a car doesnt get into the shop in a timely manner, if something doesnt get booked out to their liking. i do things to keep myself organized, but because of that, everyone bypasses the chain of command and goes directly to me for information, updates. ive been with the brand less than 2 years, and have only been sent on a few training courses. if i didnt have any automotive background, this job would kill me.
i also found out my position has a high turn over rate... at least where i am. the reliance of my position at my dealership is a lot more than other dealerships. hence why no one ever wants to transfer to my spot, hahaha...
i was an advisor before

Can any advisors, parts or service, provide some insight on the job? I've got a chance at an in-auto group transfer to a junior parts advisor, and even though I like being an apprentice tech, it's getting to the point where my current shop politics have basically stopped my progression for nearly a full year now, and repeated requests for more varied types of work falling on deaf, egotistical ears has frustrated me to the point of just wanting to hang up my wrenches as a job, and the passion I have for cars is drying up. Maybe I'll find my fire again if I'm on the other side of the counter.
Thanks for any input.
