Shopping in the states. Taxes?

Do shoppers from BC get no tax if they have proof they are from BC?

No that didn't pass...some stores gave no tax while it was still undecided

Only in Whatcom County, WA, stores will void taxes at their discretion. I was buying motor oil at Walmart in Bellingham just yesterday and paid no taxes. All I did was ask the cashier at checkout, showed her my drivers license and away I went.

its weird, some stores at seattle premium outlets offer tax-excluded sales, while others charge tax. weird.

Please read my post above and pay close attention to the text in italics. Thanks.

your point is...? my statement still holds true. Some stores choose to charge tax while others don't, and the decision is completely upon their discretion.

Just ask - worst thing is you'll have to pay tax. :)

when I was down a couple weeks ago buddy in the nike store at premium outlet said they had kiaboshed the whole no tax thing for all canadians so that we'd all be paying taxes and there'd be no exemptions. sounds like I was misinformed

At this point, it's hit or miss. Some employees know the rules (which is, tax should be charged for BC residents) and some don't. I was just in the Seattle area July 30-Aug 1, and this was my personal experience:

Nordstrom Rack (Supermall in Auburn, WA): No tax
Gap (Supermall in Auburn, WA): No tax
Stride Rite (Bellevue Square in Bellevue, WA): Paid tax
LEGO Store (Bellevue Square in Bellevue, WA): Paid tax
Victoria Secret (Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood, WA): No tax

The one thing I didn't encounter was two stores in the same area - with one honoring no tax, and the other refusing to budge.

The people I went with also bought stuff (mostly at Seattle Premium Outlets in Tulalip, WA) and paid tax (because I was elsewhere and they didn't ask about getting no tax)! So just ask, cuz they're gonna charge you tax by default...

Not really racist! 08-06-2010 12:03 PM

Keep in mind, ask BEFORE the transaction goes through or else its too late to do it.
