Powell Street Festival

FYI, this year's festival is back at Oppenheimer Park. Tomorrow and Sunday.

Man, that park has gone through some major changes over the years. Nothing like what it was when I lived in that area some 50 years ago.

El Bastardo 07-30-2010 08:21 PM

They've made some pretty big improvements to the park itself but they need to "clean up" the area

DanHibiki 07-30-2010 08:23 PM

I volunteered there a few years ago

Marioo1991 07-30-2010 09:46 PM

From what I remember years ago the food was pretty good

daica-viet 07-31-2010 12:00 AM

No, it isn't. The area has changed a lot (for the better.)

BlacknJean 07-31-2010 02:07 AM

do you guys know what this is about? seems like a japanese festival thingy

bcrdukes 07-31-2010 02:11 AM

Short answer: Yes, it is a "Japanese festival thingy."

Long answer:

The Powell Street Festival
Quote:

The Powell Street Festival is an annual celebration of Japanese Canadian arts, culture and heritage that features something for everyone: dance, music, film and video, visual arts, martial arts demos, amateur sumo tournament, craft vendors, traditional displays, and of course, tons of scrumptious Japanese food.

PSF is the largest event of its kind in Canada and the longest running community arts festival in the Lower Mainland. We provide a much-needed venue for emerging and established, professional and amateur, and traditional and contemporary artists in the Japanese Canadian and Asian Canadian communities.

Yukata, not Kimono.

The festival is pretty much the same old shit. It hasn't really changed much since the 1980's. I'd say it's worth checking out if you've never been though.

I was bored within 10 minutes. I wish I had the time to take in the free shows at the Firehall. Wanted to take in the neighbourhood tour, but what the hell, it isn't like I don't know about the place.

Bon Festivals are much more interesting............

Oh, sumo wrestling tomorrow. Open to public to participate. LOL.

Someone report on the Takoyaki. Is it better than the ones from Night Market?

Inaii 07-31-2010 10:25 PM

I hope so :( Night Market's Takoyaki sucks this year. Mine was only half cooked.

The food at the festival is a fundraiser for a lot of the Japanese Canadian organizations around the Vancouver area.

BTW, Spam sushi history can be traced back to Hawaii.

Vansterdam 08-01-2010 03:21 AM

spam sushi eh sounds like a thing i gotta try at least once :high:

wobuffet 08-01-2010 07:00 PM

Kaiten 08-01-2010 10:14 PM
