to transfer or not?
 

I'm a Criminology student at Kwantlen in the Bachelor of Arts program, and was thinking about transferring over to SFU, but wanted to know if there are really any benefits of doing so.

Ive talked to people and one of the main reasons they transfer is the co-op program...work 1 semester, go to school next...thing is I want to go into customs/immigration and they already have their own government co-op program setup for students. Plus I don't think they really care where you get your degree from, especially since most people applying only have a diploma, while I am going to have a BA degree.

I also know some people who transferred from SFU to kwantlen and find it better (Business and Crim students)

kwantlens got
smaller class sizes
more interaction (teacher/students ;))
cheaper $$$
closer to home
easier academically (at least 1/2nd year)

but SFU has more "prestige" and is considered more of a university (to some)

if i want to transfer I got to do this in the next couple of semesters since I have to transfer before I get 60 credits done

please share any other benefits of transferring over

I've transferred from SFU to kwantlen to do the engineering program at Kwantlen. I'm not sure how the arts program compare to each other between the 2 schools so I can't give you much advice there. However, I agree with most of the reasons that you have given. I didn't really enjoy my time at sfu that much (had its ups and downs) and found my experience at kwantlen a lot better.

I did take a couple of criminology courses at SFU though and thought that they were really fun and well put together by the professor.

I guess for me what it really came down to was the interaction with other people. At sfu it seems like it was harder to make friends compared to kwantlen but that could just be me.

Im at langara and finding friends are probably easier than sfu prob because of the class size. Uhh well i find its actually up to whether you want a degree from sfu or from kwant and which you would do better in. LOL i was supposed to be at kwant in crim, but i was like nah, and went to langara transfer program.

So yea its all up to what you want

I always try to defend SFU and UBC in comparison to Kwantlen etc, but in my honest opinion, for your undergrad degree i dont think it makes a huge difference. Masters and higher i would say its very important where you go.

SFU has a very mature criminology program and I knew that some of the graduates actually go to RCMP later on. It's a good program, but absolutely harrrrrrd.

I think the big thing is what you intend to do with your agree. If you need a more recognisable degree - go to SFU. If you plan to do grad work, DEFINITELY transfer to SFU. If you plan to go into customs where you'll probably be doing your certification else where, find out which has the best transferability.

I'm an SFU alum, but I actually think the quality of my education in college was a great deal better, owing largely to the fact that the proffs at the uni are often more focused on thier research & the smaller class sizes (especially in your first two years) is a huge factor. Also a lot of colleges don't have the curve grading system that the uni's have which can be helpful or harmful depending where you typically fall in your class.

Going either way is not going to guarantee you anything with regards to law enforcement. The best thing thing to do is to make the most out of what you learned, think critically,and do something related to law enforcement on your free time while attending to school.

yea i definitely got to start volunteering at like a community patrol thing

To be honest most employers will put more weight on your work experience more than anything. Like others have said I think either one will do for an undergraduate degree, focus more on gaining more experience in your desired field.

i agree 100%
someone could have a degree from the most prestigious school and be a total failure in the workplace.
