BBQ ideas

So it's summer season and everyone's bbq is going. I'm heading to a bbq party soon and need to bring some food for the grill. Other than the typical steak, wings, wieners, what are some unique/different items you guys bbq?

Inaii 08-03-2010 10:14 PM

Prawns are good, and I've heard oysters are too.

Typically what i've done for bbq's that aren't the typical burgers and wings are...

Seafood: prawn skewers, mussels, salmon fillet
Veggies: bell peppers, mushroom skewers, asparagus, eggplant, zucchini wrapped in bacon, tomatoes
Meat: chicken satay, beef satay, bbq pork
Fruits: pineapple

Most shops are fairly busy and turnover their inventory frequently. I just make sure that I go to a shop that always has customers in it.. lol.

Prawns from T&T toss them in olive oil so they dont stick and put them on the bbq man they are so good in the summer.

For BBQ parties where I have to bring a dish, I usually go with something simple and quick to cook (Like skewers, which you can make at home ahead of time and take no time to cook).

I would stay away from things like beer can chicken or planked salmon as they require frequent attention and take a lot of time, which is time you could be using for partying and not cooking (unless you're cool with that or your host is doing all the BBQ'ing and doesn't mind).

I have done many BBQ parties and have come to realize that I'm usually stuck behind the grill while everyone is at another part of the yard partying without me.

i havent been to that one, but EVX made a good point that if it gets a lot of business it may not be as much of an issue

a lot of places do that :(

i tend to stay away from buying pre-marinated stuff from the stores and marinate them myself

if you've got access to a small food processor, you're golden.

here's what I usually bring.

short ribs
puree garlic, shallots, salt, chinese cooking wine, sesame oil, soy.
marinate + grill

mushrooms
puree garlic, add butter.
grill in foil packet. squeeze lemon juice on top to finish.
cut open foil and serve right in the packet.

eggplant
garlic, butter, fish sauce, garlic chili hot sauce (same company as sriracha), mirin and soy.

how unique were you thinking?

Do you boil them first or just toss them on live?

We usually just chop up garlic and drizzle them with olive oil and wrap them in foil packets and toss them on.

Just cut the heads off and toss them on (leave the heads on if u want) no need to boil them first since they cook so fast and boiling them would over cook them.

Normally with them I make a garlic butter mix and toss in the franks hot sauce. Get a loaf of french bread as well and dip it in the sause. It's so so good :drool
