Dimsum in Chinatown
 

I'm out of touch with chinatown and the restaurants there now a days, wondering if anyone can recommend a place in Chinatown that has some good Dimsum. Looking to go with coworkers and we work in Yaletown so Chinatown is just a short bus ride away ... First thing that pops into my mind is Floata but I haven't been there in a decade or so, is it even still there ... if anyone knows of a place to try out it be appreciated ...

This is pretty disheartening for me to say but the only place in Chinatown for dim sum is Floata. All the other mom and pop shops have packed and closed up shop. :(

Floata is meh. I haven't tried the upstairs one in a while but there should be another dim sum place right beside "The Boss" restaurant on Hastings near floata restaurant.

The Boss is on Main and Keefer, not Hastings. I believe the dim sum place you are referring to upstairs is closed however, I may be wrong about this though.

there's a dim sum place near the burrard skytrain station and the hyatt regency. should be convenient for you to get there.

i can't recall the name though.

There are a few other dim sum places on Pender St. including Jade Dynasty and one upstairs of which I do not remember the name for. I've typically gone to Jade mostly because they have dim sum available all day, and the quality seems good but it's pricey.

I know the feeling. All the ones I used to go to in chinatown as a kid have closed years ago.

Yeah, I haven't had decent dim sum in chinatown for ages.
Not since my grandparents were alive and kicking :(

I can tell you to stay clear the hell way from Jade Dynasty.
I've been there a couple times with coworkers and have never once left "happy".

Floata is probably your only acceptable score.


The restaurant Spoon is referring to is Victoria Chinese Restaurant.
While still not amazing, they are head and shoulders above anything at china town now.
I'd say get to stadium, and make take the skytrain over.
It's just steps from the station if that helps your cause any?

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll see how that Kam Wai Dim Sum is and at least we have Floata as a backup plan ...

There is the C23 or C21 community bus that stops infront of the Yaletown Canada Line station that actually gets you to Keefer St. a block west of Main St. so FYI to anyone looking for a quick getaway from crazy Yaletown food prices, Chinatown is like a 7-9 min bus ride away ...

Park Lok? Thought that place closed as well. Use to go there all the time when I was a kid.

Yah I'm setting up something here at work, probably next week since this week is almost over but I'll definitely post some impressions of it and maybe pics if I get time enough to take them before they get eaten

Okay, we went to Chinatown and tried that Kam Wai Dim Sum place, here is a sorta mini review ...

First impression was it looked like any typical Chinese place, all square/rectabgular tables (no round) and all covered with multiple layers of white plastic (easy clean up) ... I was surprised it was not busy at all when we went (around noon) ...

Menu was in English and Chinese and you order by putting how many you want on the paper they give you ... not everything was on the paper so you need to look at the menu or the plastic holder with specials on it on the table and ask for them specifically (like the sticky rice or chicken feet) ...

We went a couple weeks ago so I don't quite remember what we ordered exactly but here's what I can remember

Shrimp Dumpling - Good and sizable, skin was not too thick or rubbery
Pork Dumpling - Smaller than what I'm used to, was a little dry but was tasty (good mix of shrimp and pork)
Spicy Tripe - Not as spicy as I thought it would be but they weren't overcooked
Beef Rice Roll - Was a little disappointing
Steamed Beef Balls - On par with most places, sliced in half
Spicy Wontons - Did not have any of these actually but it looked like your standard wonton swimming in some chinese hot sauce
Chicken Feet - Was good, size were on par with other places
Shrimp paste on eggplant - I did not have a chance to eat these but they looked pretty much what you'd expect them to look and probably taste

Those are the only ones I can remember but overall, the price was okay and for a group of 6 we paid like $15 each and everyone was full (well, except me but I got my fill with dessert on the way back by stopping by New Town Bakery) ... i'd recommend it for people in the area to go get some Dim Sum, they serve it all day and they take interact and CC (CC I'm not 100% sure about but they have the machine) ... way better than Floata for sure

I just came here today for dim sum. Felt it was par to slightly worse than Jade Dynasty on the other side of Main.

I found the skin on the dumplings a little on the tough side but overall the steamed dishes are far better than their fried dishes. The spring rolls were dark at the ends and I've never seen green onion pancake the way they make it. It's donut shaped and filled with green onions. BBQ pork pastry was cheap on the filling and cold.

Price is far better than Jade 6 dishes coming at ~$17 tax included. This place is definitely english friendly first instinct of the waitresses is to speak english unless you speak first.
