When looking at buying E-reader you want take a look at the features you want.

Some E-book readers will play more formats than others.
Do you want to be able to download via wifi or not.

So with that in mind, what's the one with the most "open" format? I don't mind buying the books.

3G also isn't a big deal for me...wifi would be more important because I don't think I've ever been out of a wifi zone much.

Any of you tried Nook?

Best bet is Amazon.com, my friend just recently got hers off there and it took about 3 weeks to ship? And she lives in Vancouver.
She loves it.

Just keep in mind that the Kindle isn't really compatible with reading PDF's, that was her only complaint cause a lot of ebooks come in PDF form if you're dling them via torrents. The Kobo (from Chapters) is PDF compatible, it's 149$ with Wifi

PDFs and other formats can be converted to the Kindle native format, AZW. You just email it to your Kindle account (yourname@free.kindle.com), with 'convert' in the subject line.

Yep, Kindle is Amazon-exclusive. I got mine way before Christmas rush, much better idea. :p

That's right - got a lot of free PDF eBooks (Thank you Baen!) and then emailed them over to my Kindle that way.

I got my Nook a while back and I love it. Free books ftw!

ive only looked into the KOBO. price seems right and its reads PDF. its quite light and compac.

What do you guys think about the new Sony PRST1 ebook? I know it's not released yet, but will be coming out soon. It's smallest/lightest ebook reader, the thing I like about it that you will be able to "borrow" ebooks from public library for free wirelessly. I was originally going to buy a Kindle ($115 with the ads) before I go on a trip in November, but I'm seriously considering this Sony instead. It's a little more expensive at $169 though, what do you guys think?

I have a Sony reader PRS650, the one without wifi 6" screen, and it's literally the best purchase ever.

I've tested other e-readers but the Sony one reads the smoothest to me. If the previous generation of Sony readers worked so well, I'm sure the one that's coming out with the wifi will be the same or even better. The price is pricier than most other readers, but I think you get what you pay for here for sure. It's compatible with every single format you can think of pretty much, so if you do download books you don't have to worry about whether it's in epub, pdf...etc. The touchscreen is really responsive too.

When I bought mine it was still $200 earlier this year (def a little overpriced but I still got it), so it's good that the price has dropped a bit. I highly recommend it!

Reading on books E-Readers is pretty cheap.... but you know what's cheaper?

^No thanks. I had a friend that brought some library books with him when we went on holidays. He was reading while taking a dump, and then dropped the book in the toilet...

Anyways, after spending the last couple days reading tons of review, it seems the Kindle is the most recommended budget ebook. However, I'm really liking the Kobo Touch. Seems to have a few minor quirks, but seems like the development team comes up with new firmware updates quite frequently. Will wait for the new Sony to get released in a few weeks first and see what the reviews are like, but I'm leaning towards the Kobo Touch right now.

I would rather drop a $20 book in the toilet than a $200 e-book reader. :)

If you're not in a hurry, maybe you should wait until Amazon releases their tablet. If the rumours are anything to go by, it should be a good product.

^Haha, the problem is not me dropping the book in the toilet, it's potentially handling a book that was dropped in the toilet by someone else :lol I'm going on holidays soon and want to have it with me for my trip. I can easily read 2 books in a day and don't want to have carry that many books with me. I'm against a tablet as I really want a dedicated ebook reader with good battery life and I hear that it's hard to read on LCD display

If the pages are conspicuously yellow or brown, then you might have a problem. lol.

I read books on my iPad quite a lot, and I personally have never experienced the fatigue that some people complain about regarding backlit LCD screens.

I thought it would be annoying to read books on the ipad, but for me that hasn't been the case. I actually like turning off all the lights, and just setting the brightness to medium. I read for up to 4 hours at a time like this sometimes.

IMO it's better to get a multi use tablet like ipad or galaxy 10 or touchpad (:troll: ) than something that will ONLY read e-books. Besides. the e-ink on those things is blotchy and ugly, and you need ambient light to read them, so it's actually harder on the eyes IMO

I have a Nook Color and it's running Android. $250 from the States but I got it off craigstlist for $200. It's not a perfect tablet experience but it runs comic books, ebooks, and angry birds well. I put Opera runs pretty good on it. However, if you start multi-tasking it like a 500 dollar Galaxy Tab then it might feel a bit slow.

Pros:
Cheap
Runs androids so you have all the google apps + compatible marketplace apps
Poor man's ipad
You can do more with a color screen (ex: graphic novels)
Good online support
Compact and light
Screen is very nice

Cons:
I ran into bugs periodically. Not sure if it's android, android apps or the custom firmware.
Battery life decent but not as good as iPad
Need to be a bit tech-savvy to figure out how to root, install android, tweak cpu and speaker max-volume
Not e-ink so reading novels aren't as comfortable as a cheaper ereader
No camera/mic for android apps like Skype
Honeycomb not stable so you have to use a variant of the mobile Android operating system

I had the nook color when it first came out. Got full android 2.2 loaded onto it. Ran like a champ for a cheap tablet. The ips screen is great. I would've kept it except I wanted gps and bluetooth connectivity. Got a constant 8 hours of battery life on the thing.

If you're traveling somewhere sunny and warm for holidays, ignore everyone suggesting a tablet - they all suck in the sun (glare), and are significantly heavier than an eReader.

I loved my Kindle on the beach this summer. No glare, lighter than a real book, so I could lean back with some shades on and read all day without fatigue.

There's nothing wrong with a single purpose device, especially when it accomplishes its purpose far better than the alternatives.

yah the kobo touch has been on my mind for a while, but realized a new sony is coming out.
