ICBC: Comprehensive vs Specified Perils
 

So I just found out that there is this coverage (new to me) called specified perils. It covers almost everything that comprehensive covers except windshield damage, malicious mischief, vandalism and hitting an animal.

I'm debating on if I should actually switch it to Specified Perils because it says on ICBC website that it is cheaper and was wondering if anyone know how much cheaper it is.

Also, does anyone know how much (approximately) to replacing a whole windshield on a car? Roughly.

I would guess around a grand for a windshield, but not sure.

Windshield replacement depends on the car. On a newer or luxury car, some of them are polarized and may have some built-in laminating for rearview mirror modules. Also depends on whether or not you want that tint strip on the top of the windshield. They can be as cheap as $300 (civic, cavalier, etc) to as much as $1500 (BMW 5/7, MB C,E,S class)

so with that in mind, what car you have?

Keep in mind, specified perils means if someone keys your car.. or breaks into it.. or lights it on fire... you're SOL.

If you want to save some money.. check out a second-party insurer for your extended coverage.

^ Lenko's correct. Places like Canadian Direct can provide comprehensive packages for a fraction of the cost of ICBC. Only stipulation with them and other private insurance firms, are that your rate depends on how many driving infractions/tickets you've had in the last 5 years. The less tickets, the lower the rates.

Whats the price difference?
Basically specified perils doesnt cover all the most common occurences?
New windshield on my crx was ~$500 all said and done

I've never experienced any vandalism that cost more than $300.

Never had my car broken into. So I'm wondering how much these windshield cost to repair including labour. If they exceed $300, I guess comprehensive would be the way to go.

Now as for second party insurers, are they reliable? How much of a difference if my driving infractions for the last 5 years is near perfect?

i've never had any comprehensive claim cost less than $300 total.

windshield replacement easily costs $500 or more on any car

break ins - cost of broken glass repair, damage to paint, damage to interior, clean up and detail, etc.

private insurance is not just based on claim record and tickets. I have a claim-free record, no tickets, etc. But because I drive a convertible and live downtown, CDI is always more expensive than ICBC.

Depends. I had mine replaced 'cuz it had a crack due to loose rocks.

I work in the auto industry. My windshield cost me $200.

But again, really depends on the car.

Comphrensive plus 300 deductable just to be eligible for a $200 deductable windshield is just silly. If you do the math, it cost so much more in the long run..
