Ten 'guard bears' fail to stop pot bust in Interior

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Call it 'bearijuana'! There's been a big pot bust in the southeastern B.C., and Smokey and his buddies have been busy.

About 10 black bears were being used to guard a fenced-off marijuana grow-op at Christina Lake. There were about 1,000 plants outside that, surprisingly, no one had tried to steal.

The Mounties were tipped off and moved in. They tell CBC News, officers soon noticed the bears were docile and tame. Turns out they had been living there for some time and were pretty used to the grow-op and people.

The woman accused had apparently been feeding them for years. There are pictures of officers mugging for the camera with the bears. The unfortunate part is the bears are now used to humans and may have to be put down

Are you sure they weren't high? I mean the bears, not the popo. As soon as I saw "they were docile and tame" I LOL'd.

Putting non-agressive bears down is rediculous, isn't there some sort of sanctuary they could be re-located to?

tiger_handheld 08-18-2010 08:29 AM

why do the bears have to be put down just cuz they are used to humans? whats the logic behind that?

spoon.ek9 08-18-2010 08:32 AM

someone needs to photoshop "afrobear" singing: i was gonna guard a grow op, but then i got high :D

They won't survive in the wild.

She's been feeding them for years so they're use to having humans around that care for them. They won't be able to hunt for their food properly as well.

jackmeister 08-18-2010 08:45 AM

why not just put them in the zoo?

thats where i see other docile and tame animals..

Greenstoner 08-18-2010 08:52 AM

Wild bears that wander into residential areas can be scared off by people while bears that are used to being around people wouldn't be and may constantly return for food.

the owner should've employed some cougars as well

ae101 08-18-2010 09:40 AM

at it's not a pedo bear lol

StylinRed 08-18-2010 09:48 AM

bears dont attack people from what i hear anyhow only when antagonized and they usually run when that happens

we've got a bear that lives in our neighbourhood, somewhere, or it just comes by a lot. it just hangs out in between the trees and watches people out for a walk it never goes through the trash either (except for a couple times during this summer and it stopped)

shame to put these down :/

Gumby 08-18-2010 10:28 AM
