Need Answer ASAP: Do we still have to pay Sales tax if in Washington?

I wasn't sure because I remember seeing an article that the Judge ruled out, and BC-ers still have to pay the sales tax and are not exempt from it. But I remember there were some people that went to the States recently and said otherwise...

So for the people that went down to the states recently, are you ELIGIBLE for an EXEMPTION from sales tax

Thank you for the quick answer

YES. the rule was overturned by a Washington state judge i believe.

from the other post it sounded like only one city was making people pay.

raysquared 08-21-2010 09:43 AM

went down there on tues.
all places still charging sales tax (9.5%) even if you are a BC resident.

It used to be isolated to Whatcom County (Bellingham), but now it's all-state last time I went.

MoBettah 08-21-2010 10:54 AM

Tell em you're from Alberta, Alberta is tax exempt.

Kaolinite 08-21-2010 10:56 AM

^ they would probably ask for ID and then you have a BC license...

I went last week and apparently, that rule doesn't exist anymore.

I went to the Premium outlets and downtown Seattle.

Leopold Stotch 08-21-2010 02:44 PM

i read somewhere Nordstrom will still give you the tax exemption

but iuno i went there yesterday and forgot to ask.

Hope this helps. Went to states early august.
At #202 outlet only certain stores are tax exempt. Shoe stores and CK were tax exempt but when I bought some stuff at bath and beyond (soap bars for mom) it wasnt.
The sales guy said small companies are not tax exempted unlike bigger brand stores.

Then went to seattle downtown, macys, and after purchasing some clothing the sales guy was super nice and told me I get 11% coupon (with out of town passport proof) plus no tax at all!!
But whats weird was he knew my passport said BC but the receipt said AB.

At the end, still saved some money.
Have fun at states.

I went there and they told me they don't offer the exemption anymore.

Anjew 08-21-2010 05:14 PM

the macys people are always nice

J____ 08-21-2010 09:39 PM

went down 2 days ago. they dont offer the tax exempt anymore. Went to nordstrom in bellevue last week and they still offered it no tax, 2 days ago they said they stopped doing it.

Gumby 08-21-2010 09:47 PM

They should charge you tax, but some cashiers are dumber than others. Just hope you get one that doesn't know the rules!

Bottom line - it doesn't hurt to ask about the no tax exemption!

Nvasion 08-21-2010 09:53 PM

nordstrom worked for me:) downtown seattle and bellvue

StealthFighter 08-22-2010 01:09 AM

walmart in bellingham was honouring it about a month ago. but i went last week and they're no longer honouring it.

optiblue 08-22-2010 09:08 AM

dang, so literally the HST does nothing for us! Either way, shopping in the states saves you money :)

racerman88 08-22-2010 11:08 AM

paid tax on everything yesterday

02'topaz 08-22-2010 02:17 PM

hit and miss for us yesterday. Some did it, others not. Agreed with above posters as it doesn't hurt to ask because some people just don't know that it's no longer going down...

I thought the judge's ruling on the BC tax exemption screwed over the Albertans as well...
