Transmission/Gear Changing Problems in Automatic
 

The car I drive has about 35,000km

This problem began yesterday and quickly escalated to the point where my car was unable to move in Drive or Reverse.

At first the problem occurred when going from 3rd to 4th gear. The RPM would get the point the gears would change however instead of the car changing gears the rpm would quickly shoot up to 5 or 6. Once I removed my foot from the gas the RPM dropped down and once I accelerated again the gears would change from 3rd to 4th.

This happened all the way home. After a few hours I tried to drive the car again and this same problem started to happen when changing from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. Move forward an hour later and sometimes when I came to a complete stop the car wouldn't even move and act as if I was in Neutral.

I turned the car off and then back on and I was able to drive away with the above problems still happening.

This morning the problem got even worse with the car pretty much being unable to move.

Any Ideas?

What car? Have you check your oil? If your car is after 2000 scan the car with a manufacturer's scanner, it can query the transmission ECU to see if there are any stored fault.

as godwin said...what kind of car...and get the tranny ecu reset and scanned.

usually low fluid levels causes a whole wack of problems with auto trans...another possibility is the valvebody failng.

sounds like clutch packs the trans is slipping. For your sake, hope it's a cheap car you're driving

well there's a way to solve it for most cars. if it is doing this invest in some wolfs head ATF like 3x the amount your car takes up.
drain it out. then wait a bit fill it up start car wait a bit drain again then repeat till your on your third set your car should run fine after wards.
if this doesn't solve your problem probably something with the transmission ecu

my old ford had a similar problem, but at 215xxx kms. I scrapped it and bought a newer car in manual so i wont have that problem again.

Its a Kia Picanto. Not sure of year. I have been borrowing it for about 6 months so that is why I haven't really bothered to find out too much more info.

It has been tough to get information about what is going on because both the owner and mechanic are Vietnamese(i am in Vietnam). I am not paying for any of this but just curious as to how or what happened.

So far I have been told:

1. something wrong with gear system
2. Gears were worn

I was just surprised that the car became unable to drive in the span of 1 day because there were no previous signs of problems.

If you are not responsible for it, you can't really do much diagnostic to it unless you have a tear down or have a code reader.

#1 is obvious. #2 can be whole bunch of valve bodies, clutch packs, rather than gears were worn. Gears don't get worn that fast in modern cars.

Im going go with this.....im leaning towards a plugged or stuck passage in a valvebody...
