Public Library

I never thought I would ever step inside a library again after graduating from University some thirty years ago. I'm a philatelist. I collect stamps. Mostly Canadian mint. My collection is pretty extensive (40 years worth of collecting), but recently I've had this strange urge to collect stamps from other countries. I decided to start a collection of stamps from select Asian countries. Problem is, a Scotts Catalogue of World Wide Stamps, which comes in 6 volumes, go for about 90 bucks per volume. That could buy me a lot of stamps. I decided to give the public library a call. Lo and behold they had the latest set (2011). Not knowing much about the library at Metrotown, I go there and park outside. It's pay parking, so I dropped some coins into the meter and headed inside. First thing I see is a couple of old women at the front desk. Nice ladies, but definitely no eye candy. I didn't have much time left on the meter, so I quickly looked at the stamp catalogues and left. On my way out, I asked if there was any free parking. Two levels of free parking. My fucking god, I had no idea. I decided to go back again today. This time, I parked below for free (three hour time limit). I signed up for a library card. Jeebers, this is a sure sign I am getting old. I have a freaking library card! Next, I'll be sitting at McD's getting cheap coffee for seniors, LOL.

The library at Metrotown is pretty big. Not as big as the main library in downtown Vancouver, of course. I was pleasantly surprised at a lot of stuff I saw today. I didn't know they had all this stuff. They have workstations that have all kinds of databases, including Alldata, which is way too cool, because I just happen to be working on this POS 2002 Mazda MPV. They have car manuals, CD's, DVD's, etc. And......... there were some pretty good looking librarians there today, not to mention the patrons. Imagine that, eye candy at the library, of all places.

That bby library was favorite library when I was studying at bcit. It's quiet, not a lot of people, and very well equipped.

ive gone by the one at metrotown since i was a lil kid i always wanted to go in but never have :/

speaking of stamps

my cousin has an extensive stamp collection of stamps from Hong Kong, Japan, China, Pakistan, India supposedly they "were" worth hundreds of grand (i dunno)

he had left them here at my aunts house in the closet... well one of their pipes burst and well ;) they're all paper mush now and they weren't appraised or insured anything like that lol he literally cried! (i know i know i probably sound like a big dick but he's a prick so its all good)

check out VPL new eBook service so you don't have to worry about returning books. The ebook will "return" on its own after a certain time (4 months I believe)

Who knows - maybe 89blkcivic's into the naughty librarian look? :D

MG1 08-26-2010 08:45 AM

Jeezuz..... all I did was mention the fact that I was surprised at all the eye candy. I didn't go there for that reason. It's just an added bonus. LOL.

TheNewGirl 08-26-2010 08:45 AM

I used to live just across the street from that library, it's a nice one.

Also some of the public libraries in North Van now rent out Kindles/Kobo book readers. Additionally if you already have your own Ebook reader, with a public library card you can get access to free ebooks (beyond the classics readily available through google and Kobo).

So the library's not so bad any more.

Half a century. Man, time flies.

Sounding better all the time. I'll see if they have ebooks at any of the Burnaby branches. BTW, has anyone been to the new library by High Gate? I drove by there and it looked really nice.
