CHILLIWACK (NEWS1130) - Over 60,000 opium poppy plants have been found on a rural Chilliwack property almost three hectares in size in what Mounties call the largest bust of its kind in Canadian history.

It's thought the opium was being grown to produce a powder-like substance known as doda, which is often taken with tea or hot water for a quick easy high.

Corporal Leanne Dunlop says there were plants in various stages of growth in the field that blended in well with the area. "Some more further along and that would indicate that there were portions of the field that were likely planted first and other established after that. We did hand harvest the mature plants because we don't want the seeds to spread anywhere, and then we contracted a local farmer to come in and eradicate the crop."

A 31-year-old Abbotsford man, and a 24-year-old man from Mission have now been arrested in connection with the grow-up. Neither of them was known to police. The two men are due to appear in court on December 14th and will face recommended charges of production of a controlled substance, and possession for the purpose of trafficking a controlled substance

Mounties say neither of the suspects owned the field where poppies were grown. They say the property was leased for the season by an owner who was not involved in the grow-op.

The poppy plants you get opium from, are they a male/female thing like pot plants?

The seeds themselves do not contain significant amounts of opiates. But a poppy tea consumed in some areas and often referred to as doda has been controversial for containing ground opium poppy plant, especially the seed head, and contains significant levels of opiates.[32] Popular in some South Asian communities, doda is created by grinding dried poppy husks or poppy seeds into a fine powder and then ingesting the mix with hot water or tea. In Canada, doda is made from poppy plants brought in from Afghanistan and Arizona under the guise of legal purposes such as floral arrangements, but is sold illegally from some meat markets.[33]
the "Doda" issue always pops up from time to time apparently its really popular and supposedly doesnt get you high unless its concentrated

A LOT of brown guys do this shit. usually the older tradesmen guys that are 35+. they get messed up all day long and keep working. the price of opium has skyrocketed recently. the ones that can't afford it any longer are starting to act like junkies. Its a poor mans heroin. They don't realize its as addictive as it is. There are quite a few stores in surrey that sell this stuff. You can walk in and even ask for a free sample and they'll give it to you.

I was offered opium a few years back. Guy used a knife, torch and a straw. Thank god I said no. My buddy who didn't say no just spiraled downhill from there. Not a drug to be played around with.

Alot of Persian guys, say 40 years old and plus, like to use this drug.
