Washington state....Canadians don't pay sales tax?

How does sales tax (9.5%) work with us Canadians when we cross over to Washington?

I am not 100% sure, but I think we don't have to pay tax on tangible items (excluding meals, lodging, etc) on anything? Do we have to show ID or something?
