Sorry do dump on this RIP parade, but how is it that he is a "hero" for swerving to the right?.. all he was doing was trying to avoid the collision, and ended up being the one getting hit. They are making it sound like he purposefully sacrificed his life to save his wife. It sounds more like he just swerved right instead of left, and got hit.

Agreed, but "sacrificing his life to save his wife" is a lot more romantic than "car accident, husband died, wife & unborn baby survived". :p

GodZilla 09-07-2010 09:34 AM

I searched the drivers name found this about the man who saved his family.

The video game industry has lost one of its young stars. Brian Wood, a lead designer on Relic Entertainment's universally acclaimed WWII RTS, Company of Heroes, was killed in a Seattle-area car accident on Friday night.
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that Wood, 33, and his 31-year-old pregnant wife were driving on Highway 20 in Oak Harbor, Washington just before 9 p.m. on Friday night when their Subaru Outback was struck head-on by a Chevy Blazer that swerved into their lane. Wood's wife suffered minor injuries and her unborn child is not in danger. Two passengers in the Blazer were also killed.

To be honest, it's probably true that the thought of being a hero and sacrificing himself never entered his mind at all, and that all he was trying to do was get out of the path of the oncoming car... and usually, that would mean swerving further to the right.

But at the end of the day, if it makes people - especially his wife and family - feel better by believing he consciously made the decision to save his wife and unborn child by sacrificing himself, it doesn't hurt anyone...

Well it's impossible to say, without knowing what was off the right side of the road, etc. But I agree with InvisibleSoul:
