dvd drive troubles...

Basic run down of the problem is windows detects the cd drive but the cd drive doesn't detect any cd that's inserted. Checked all the connections and it's all good, any suggestions on what to try?

Trying to help a computer illiterate friend troubleshoot over the internet is hard...

does the drive make any noise when you put a cd in? other then the cd spinning
if it does make a louder noise then usual, then the drive is gone..

Nope, no odd noises are made, it does spin and attempt to load. It worked about 2 weeks ago no problem.

well then i would suggest you either go buy a new one, $50 or less for a DVD burner or download a program that can check the drive for problems..

If he ends up having to get a new dvd/cd drive, they're cheap nowadays anyways. Ncix sales have them for like $20buxs.

I've seen this a few times, in all cases it was a dead drive.
