Transferring Steams & Games to new W7 PC? (from XP)

I have a few games (from steams and other electronic copies) in my current PC using Window XP.

I am building a new PC w/ W7. Can i use the steam game backup function (on the XP machine), and load it to the window 7 machine?
Is there going to be a problem since it is 2 different OS?

It's loaded onto your account, so I don't think you should have any problems. Correct me anybody if I'm wrong! From experience, I just logged into steam and redoenloaded my games because they're account dependent.

Yeap, as long as you have it in your steam account you can just redownload it. I think the steam backup feature is if you want to install it via disk instead of having to redownload everything again.

Also, take not of some of the games that have DRMs and see if you have any installed. If you install it too many times, regardless if it's in your steam account or not you might not be able to play. But don't quote me on this exactly.

If you don't care about registry files and have a backup hd you could even go as far as copying your entire steam folder now. and just popping it back into the Program Files or Program Files (x86) if you're using windows 7 64 bit. All the games will still work like that, done it a ton of times with all the steam games when I built 4 rigs in a row.

I know I can redownload it, but prefer not because there are like 40GB+ of files. it's gonna take forever and I am usually very close to my bandwidth every month. ($2/GB on over limit...)

So just copying the folder would work? (and yes, i am going from 32bit XP to 64bit W7)

Just copy the files in steamapps onto the new computer and everything will be like same, especially if you have some saved settings that you are too lazy to re-do.
