Bill & Ted are back a third time?

Most excellent news! Actor Alex Winter has confirmed to MTV.com that a third "Bill & Ted" movie is officially in the works.

"We kicked around the idea over the years and had always thought if we could make something that was as kind of genuine in spirit as the originals and without falling prey to kind of retro cynicism or something that was unnecessary, it would be worth doing," Winter said of the franchise about two high school students who muddle around the space-time continuum.

"Now the cat's out of the bag, and the truth is that, yeah, we have finally hit upon an idea that we think is pretty great."

The film, currently being written by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, will have lofty expectations to live up to the original 1989 cult classic. "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" launched the careers of both Winter (Bill) and Keanu Reeves (Ted), and even inspired an animated series and a '91 sequel, "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey."

The two actors will reportedly return for the film’s third installment, although Winter acknowledged to MTV that picking up their beloved characters after 20 years would require a bit of finesse. One of the obstacles will be moving forward without franchise mainstay George Carlin, who passed away in 2008.

"It's really complicated," Winter told MTV about moving on without Carlin, who played the time traveler Rufus. "He was such a big part of the spirit of the originals, and we've been trying to be clever about making a new one that can handle the Carlin issue."

"It's actually stopped us in the past — why do it without Rufus?" Winter elaborated. "We've been delicate about moving around him."

But still, Winter is optimistic that the film's tone would be in spirit with the original movies and a worthy addition to the franchise, even without a key cast member.

"We don't want to make a cynical 'here's Bill and Ted — you guys are our kids, now YOU guys go be Bill and Ted and the franchise can live for another 25 years!'" Winter told the website. "It's a straight up, what's the funniest and most surprising take on where Bill and Ted would be right now if we stopped back in on them? That's what we're doing."
