ever eat in a fine dining restaraunt? you can bet the staff is underpaid, stressed to fuck, and are held to almost impossibly high standards. thats the name of the game
for every plate to come out perfect, the chefs need to be hard
ive had whole plates of food just trashed because the seasoning wasnt quite right, loaves of half risen bread tossed around because they werent rolled uniform

its a tough environment, cant handle the heat? get out of the kithcen

i sure did

I worked at Milestone's for 5 years (during high school) and got up to Lead Prep. They wanted me to go to school and become a sous chef but I declined because I knew what I was getting myself into. On the 5th year I quit. The best f'n decision I ever made and went to art school instead.

You work for shit wages, long hours, work with dumbass high school drop outs, and give up your weekends just because you're "passionate" about cooking? No thanks.

Jsunu 09-29-2010 08:32 AM

Fuck I hate name association reporting. It just brings in more rapid fire retard responses just based on the headline alone.

I love Kitchen Nightmares, and he does a brilliant job of getting through to retarded business owners and staff.

It seems most here are judging based on Hells Kitchen where Ramsey is a dick. This dude was from Kitchen Nightmares.

I find Ramsey to be over-the-top on Kitchen Nightmares, yet not a dick. He's be disgusted at the cleanliness, or the quality of the food, yet overall he doesn't yell at or belittle people on Kitchen Nightmares (unless the owner or chef is an idiot, then he does and it is deserved).

Kitchen Nightmares is one of my favourite shows too, I think Ramsey does an excellent job turning around the businesses. For the most part it stick too, the followup shows usually show much happier and less stressed owners and chefs.

unit 09-29-2010 08:46 AM

i like hells kitchen. i mean... all the cooks are complete idiots and its basically a fake cooking reality show, but its entertaining because of ramsay.

Mugen EvOlutioN 09-29-2010 08:50 AM

the kitchen got too hot

Exactly. Ramsey has Kitchen Nightmares in Britain and he's very mellow and more to the point of the food.

He bitches on Kitchen Nightmares in America because that's what Americans want to see.

His shows are awesome.

Death2Theft 09-29-2010 09:45 AM

It's not Ramsey it's the american editors that cut the show and take the focus away from the food.

If I ever saw the unsanitary conditions some of those restaurants on Kitchen Nightmares have, I would flip out on the restaurant owners just like Ramsey.

No joke, some of them are serving things unfit for human consumption. The first thing he usually does is sit down and order their food too, then he goes in back and sees the shithole it came from and how old it actually was.

smoothie. 09-29-2010 10:45 AM

It sucks that even Ramsay got hit hard by the "recession".

unit 09-29-2010 11:14 AM

^why? hes still better off than anyone you know... and he has the celebrity power to make back millions easily.

quasi 09-29-2010 11:27 AM

The reason Ramsay might be more likely to have contact with guys who commit suicide is from working with businesses that are so far in the hole. Most of these people have everything invested in their business and when it's failing it's hard for anyone to cope with. Most people don't off themselves but some people can't handle the thought of restarting or failing.

Ch28 09-29-2010 11:41 AM

Most of Ramsay's American shows suck.

Want to watch a show with real cooking? Check out Top Chef

Nightwalker 09-29-2010 11:43 AM

I watch Kitchen Nightmares because it's one of the few shows on TV about running a business. I don't watch it for the cooking.

A majority of restaurants fail too, often with the hard work and money of a family behind it. :( It is not an easy industry to establish yourself, thus why we're seeing more and more chains where investors and conglomerates take the risk rather than mom and pop.

jmvdesign 09-29-2010 12:09 PM

The restaurant industry can be a hit or miss. You just gotta have the right product, investors, and a little bit of marketing.

I didn't catch this show but saw it on the papers a couple of days ago. Nice to see a few locals getting somewhere:

Dragons' Den exposure lures investors to family-run waffle shop in Victoria

It's funny how we're taught in writing courses to make everything as relevant and specific as possible... then the newspapers do the exact opposite.

I don't like watching cooking shows because it gets me hungry and make me want to cry :(

wobuffet 09-29-2010 12:46 PM

imo pretty fucking stupid for the ppl to commit suicide cuz they're in debt. shows how much you care for your family.
at least try to make your death more natural so your family can inherit your life insurance $$

note: life insurance companies do not give you $$ if you commit suicide. only if you die by natural cause/accidents.

AzNightmare 09-29-2010 12:56 PM

I doubt these suicides have anything to do with Ramsey.
They asked for criticism, Ramsay laid out the hard facts.
Restaurant owner realized he's in deepshit and too much of a coward to do anything
about it, and quit his life, leaving his wife and kids behind.

Even the family doesn't blame Ramsay.

So would I. One has to remember he's eaten the food before checking out the sanitary/quality conditions of the kitchen.
I enjoy watching KN but cant stand HK. His attitude is off the charts on HK but its all for ratings

I don't know if it's all for ratings. If they really get to be head chef in one of his establishments, and he has to test them to their capabilities under stress as well as culinary, interpersonal, and leadership skills in such a short time, he should be as hard as possible.

I actually don't think he's off the charts, and the people that apply have seen the show and know what they're getting into.

those failures have no chance running a high end kitchen like the ones they offer as prizes on the show.
the show is just for ratings, and none of those 'executive chefs' are still working for the restaurants that they won positions for on the show.
most of the restaurants arent his establishments at all. araxi has nothing to do with gordon ramsay, nor do most of the other restaurants.
the HK contestants are pretty much all just line cooks, not real cooks who create menus, etc...

Nightwalker 09-29-2010 02:39 PM

Whoops, I knew they weren't all his places! Still, that level of testing is fair imho, they do represent him in a way and the jobs are important ones with huge salaries to suit.

They won 1-year contracts though, and obviously have had massive career boosts through the show. Dave left Araxi after the Olympics.
