I didn't care much for how the event was run by drivers unlimited I felt it was a waste of time in the morning sessions to do instructor swaps every 2 laps. right when my car got up to temp you were forced to pit. I don't like how once the instuctors got out of your car there was no instruction to proceed back on course. I don't like how they make passing on the right becuase it goes against every natural instict in your body. Slow on right Fast on left, thats how i've been driving for my entire left. There explanation makes sense but you could see all day people stuggling with it with lots waving by for the pas but drifting to the right. i'm guilty of it as well I didn't like how beginners weren't allowed to pass. Whats the point of going to a lapping day if your stuck behind a slow car all day. I didn't like how they used black flags for everything. you didn't know if you specifically were being called in or the entire session. There was no good flow to the day. comments? |

There explanation was as your exiting the corner entering the main straight on power and on the limit of traction so its safer to pass on the right. What made it more confusing was all other passing zones follow conventional theory of pass on left, only main straight was passing on right. I see there point of view but its ass backwards. Anyone thats going to pass is going to set them selves up appropreatly before entering the main straight. Quote:

passing on the right does give the passer the right flow onto the straight but causes me to actually not lift on the throttle and pass. Passing on the left requires me to lift and wait till the vehicle in front move to the right which actually is safer in my opinion. if everyone was running in advance, then passing on the right would be better. |
cut him some slack. it is his first time track, actually first time anything. I sat with him in the morning and he improved through out the day. he just wanted to learn how to drive better on the streets. ;) Quote:

In fact, if there is a slower car in front of you, wouldn't that car be pushing out wide to the right as opposed to the faster car being slowed down? Also, T1 requires you to be on the left side of the track to make the right turn. So if you passed the car on the right, then you have to cut back to the left to set up the car for T1. Seems a little bit odd to me. |
^ Well the instructors there explained that since turn 1 is a right turn, passing on the "inside" made more sense. But again, quite a few people I know didn't really like the way Drivers Unlimited ran the track day. |

wow lots of questions for someone who was not even there. ;) as stated in my opinion generally if it is for everyone then it is probably safer passing on the left for track days. The reason is both vehicle would need to slow down. If we are talking "what if's", then essentially anything can happen on any corner and any straight away. the car being passed is suppose to slow down and point for the passer to pass where the faster vehicle can stay on speed. yes this is a lapping day. nothing in my context stated it was a race day. I don't see problems staying on gas on T9 and onto the straight even if it is a track day. that is the point of taking your cars out on track and learn. I wouldn't want to cruise my way around the track. Myself and many others have always stayed with the flow of the line out of T9 to the right side of the straight away and back left when there is no traffic. There is definately enough space for the faster vehicle to do this especially the vehicle being pass is suppose to slow down and point. If this is a " race day ". lots of racers will be late braking on the right side to cut into T1. :thumbsup: Quote:

I was there in spirt. =P Actually, I regret not going but then again I couldn't get the time off since a couple of people were away on busniess which left me in charge. It just seemed a little odd passing on the right for one section and then passing on the left for the other sections. I'll just stay in Novice where there is no passing. =) |
I agree with your point of view, especially for the higher horsepower cars that can carry lots of speed through T9 and can get really twitchy upon entering the main straight under full throttle BUT its only safer if everyone is on the same page and there is reasonable expectation that every one is going to do the same thing. I felt that it was more dangerous because it was more confusing. Your natural instict is to pass on the left. all day i say people waving for the pass and then drifting to the right. I was also guilty of this as well. I had to make a conscious thought when entering the main straight to way by and keep to the left and anytime you have to actually think about anything at track speeds is a receipy for disaster.Many people were being waved in for passing on the left that day so i'm not the only one that felt it was confusing. I definately felt the tension same as everyone else in the morning when the lead coach from driving unlimited said to pass on the right of the front straight and pass left on the other 3 passing zones. It is not what we traditional do however I do agree to some extent that he is right but only if all drivers can see it on the same page (as u stated). this is the reason why I stated that I would fully agree for it if it is all advance drivers. Most importantly is that all run groups should attend the driver's meeting to listen to the instructions and comply through out the event. I sat in with many cars during all run groups in the two morning sessions. No one created any potential problems that I see when on course and most drove safely to bring their cars home accident free. Quote:
