Motorola XT720 & Wind Mobile

I did a search and found no thread on it.

I'm thinking of getting the XT720, and Wind is the only place that sells it for 450 + tax. I have a family plan with Rogers and a non-3G sim. I'm planning to use that sim with the XT720; I will only use Wi-Fi and don't need 3G.

Is the phone from Wind locked? How much does it cost me to unlock the phone, or if I can just buy a phone unlocked and skip the Corp War BS?

Thanks!

It'll work if you can get it unlocked. But there's no difference in 2g or 3g sims. Regardless the xt720 from wind will only work on 2g for Rogers anyways.

I'd recommend just getting an unlocked one from ebay.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to get it for 450 and pay for unlock? How much is unlock?

I've heard the CPU can be o/c to 1Ghz? Well personally I dun like to o/c so that's okay; besides I tried it at Wind and it seems to be tuned well. Gotta love the uncorrupted Android.

Wind would give the code to unlock after 3 months of service, but I won't and can't do that. If it is as simple as a code then there really aren't much risks during the unlock process right? Just someone with a code-gen and punch it in?

if you dont plan on using data and voice only, then it works fine...

I don't know what they're charging to unlock. But I recall seeing unlocked ones on eBay for around the same price. Have you even confirmed that wind will sell you just the phone without a plan?

ya it's $430; $20 rebate when I activate an account and $150 credit for service distributed equally to 12 months. So that means bs and BS; no contract my ass!

Edit: Oh ya so they will sell it for $450 + tax, locked. They will give you the unlock code after 3 months of service. Again... fucking BS!

35/45 a month for phone service that provides unlimited is already good, the 150$ credit is just something additional. its not hard to get phones unlocked, every other provider locks their phones even if you buy it at full price

Gachinto 10-02-2010 04:27 PM

Ya just the fact that promote no contract but uses other methods to lock you in. It's business after all, but I am glad that Wind is bringing competition to the Big 3. I will switch over when their Wind Zone expand.

I checked eBay and price is pretty good if it's "never locked".

Isn't unlocking a smart phone like Cracking software? Is there potential risks?

rk604 10-02-2010 04:47 PM

It is no contract, and no your not really locked in. I'd call it an incentive to stay with them, you get the 150$ distributed over 12months. I'd say the xt720 is a pretty solid phone, too bad im not that interested in android anymore

FerrariEnzo 10-02-2010 05:21 PM

if your gona spend that much, why not spend a bit more and the Samsung Galaxy S or the variants.. its a much better phone, as per all the reviews...

^^^
i agree, but i wouldn't expect much support or updates from samsung. thats the only reason why i went nexus one and not galaxy s back then

Gachinto 10-02-2010 05:41 PM

Galaxy S is $599 vs. XT720 $450.

Galaxy S basically has a better screen: AMOLED and 0.3 inches bigger.

Camera is pretty essential for me because I gotta take frequent pictures of stuff and email to clients. Galaxy S has NO FLASH at all, not even LED.

Actually I'm torn between HTC Desire and XT720.

I have an HTC desire. It's great. I'm not going back to Motorola due to their lack of firmware updates and locked bootloader. And any phone you buy from any cellular provider here will always be network locked regardless if you're on contract or buy it outright. The 3 month thing is pretty normal.

Is unlocking safe? Or should I buy an import from Hong Kong or US on eBay?

Yes. Usually its just enter the unlock code that you buy.

OH SHIT!
I talked to a gal @ Bell and she said Desire Z is coming in Nov!

Now I dunno if I will still get Motorola... Desire Z would probably be $599 retail.

!MiKrofT 10-03-2010 05:03 PM

If it were up to me I'd get the Desire Z. The new HTC Sense is awesome as well it's 2.2. XT720 is only 2.1 and the way things are going I doubt they'll release 2.2 until middle of next year. Not to mention faster processor, possbily better screen, and more firmware options once it's rooted,.

Gachinto 10-03-2010 06:51 PM

I dunno if they will sell me Desire Z without plan though. It is simply not possible for me to go Bell since I'm bond by contract with Rogers.

!MiKrofT 10-03-2010 07:36 PM

Well it looks like either way you're gonna need to sign some sort of "contract" be it for 3 months or whatever. ebay or craigslist is probably your best bet.
