U.S. President Barack Obama has endured months of bitter headlines, frothing cable news punditry, and dubious, misspelled placard slogans, but Sunday marked the first time that words came close to physically harming him.
An unidentified attendee threw a paperback book at Obama while he spoke at a rally in Philadelphia aimed at minimizing losses for his Democrats in midterm elections on Nov. 2, international media report.
Obama did not seem to notice the book, which joins a growing list of projectiles aimed at presidents, from the two shoes hurled at George W. Bush by an Iraqi journalist to the two misfired pistol shots with which a White House painter tried to kill Andrew Jackson in 1835.
A naked man was photographed being escorted out by police during the rally, but there was no indication Monday morning that he was the man behind the fittingly erudite protest against a president both chastised and championed for his professorial leanings.
Republicans are expected to make big gains on the midterm congressional ballot, and Obama must limit the damage by mobilizing a coalition of young voters and the Democratic party's progressive base that won him the White House in 2008.
Obama will travel to Florida on Monday to campaign for Democrats, take part in two town hall style events designed to address ordinary Americans during the week — including one event hosted by MTV aimed at young voters — visit Delaware on Friday, and stump for his party again in Massachusetts on Saturday.
He will also host a meeting at the White House on Monday morning to showcase his push for extra infrastructure spending to boost hiring and communicate that he understands the fear of American households over an unemployment rate stuck near 10 per cent.

It's not like it's a purposefully designed 'freedom shoe' or 'attack quaran' or something... a shoe or paperback book isn't balanced and is pretty awkward to throw perfectly straight Posted via RS Mobile
