Where/how can I see if I qualify for EI as a student?

Currenty I'm a full time student with no job, for the past 6 years I worked full time but I'm also currently living at home as well, I thought if you live at home as a full time student you can't qualify for EI? But it seems I know people in the same situation who are?

you just apply for EI. know a buddy who does this alot - he works on contract a lot.

Not sure if special cases apply to students. But for the regular working person who's unemployed, I know you can't get EI if you're participating in full time classes; cause you're not looking/available for work. Only exception is if you qualify for retraining programs and you can prove that there's living expenses you have to pay.

If you're maintaining a full course load you won't get it. I believe you can only carry 6 credits (if your school considers 9 to be a full course load). There are exceptions for re training programs BUT you have to go into them after you're on EI and have been referred to them through EI. These programs can not last longer then one year less a day.

You generally can only qualify for EI if you've been laid off (so if you quit your job or were fired you'll likely be denied) or are on parental leave. You can go ahead and apply but most likely they'll refer you to Student Loan.

I don't think that is true.

A friend has recently applied for EI because she is enrolled in full time studies and has been approved for EI. I remember her telling me that one of the reps from EI called her asking her if she wasn't in full time studies/a student, would she be working? She said no but the rep asked her if she meant "yes" and hinted at it.

She obviously then said yes and got approved for EI.

I was working then had knee surgery so I went on ei. Decided to go to school while rehabbing and they told me I couldn't have it anymore even when I said I was willing to work and couldnt find anywhere applied etc they ruled I couldnt. wtf

Oh? One of my former employees (who was laid off) lost his EI status when he took a full time course load (he was part time while he'd been working).

Maybe it depends heavily on the case worker and what they're willing to fudge.

yea, i applied just need the ROE now so we'll see how it goes

eh..did not know they gave EI for full-time students.

Unless they got laid off and going back to school for a new career, it's too generous IMHO.

Yeah I have never heard of EI for full timer students either. That sounds way too good to be true.

You can be on EI and be a full time student if you were already a full time student at the time you lost your job.

If you lost your job and then went to school full time, you do not qualify.

So I'm grabbing my ROE on Monday and finishing my application

Since the last time I worked was august 20th, are my chances of getting it now worse or would it just effect the amount I would get since I've delayed the application?

Apprentices in trades can apply for EI when they go back to continue with their schooling. I don't know about other subjects though.

It will not make the monthly amount you would be eligible for any different. But, they more than likely won't 'retro pay' from the 20th of August. Rather, they will start your EI payments the day you first applied, if you get it. For the past 7 years I've had to use EI a few times and have never been accepted while going to school full time.

Any updates on this?

havent got any word back and i applied like a month ago, shit is so slow to even let you know wether your eligible or not

I'm an apprentice and I get EI when I go to school and it's great.

I got declined mainly becuase my ROE said I quit

Damn, should have talked to the accountant at work a little more and seen if they could have said they laid me off
