Dead PSU or what?
 

I just assembled a new system and during the installation of W7, the screen went blank, and after a few minutes, the computer shut off and wouldn't turn back on. (NO power, no light, no beep, no boot)

I tried unpluggin everything and resetting all the cables, but same thing.
My first thought is obviously the PSU.

However, I did the paper clip test and the PSU turns on. (http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/fo...power-supplies)

If the PSU turns on with the paper clip test, does that mean the PSU is NOT faulty?
But if the PSU is not the fault, what else could cause the system to not boot with no power and no light??

This is the comp spec:
Phenom X4 965
MSI 870-GA
Patriot 4GB
WD 640GB Black
EVGA GTX 460 (btw, the card has TWO 6 pin power input, do I need to plug in both or just 1 is fine?)
PSU: OCZ 550 Fatality modular.

My mothers computer just had the same problem, the screen would turn off then reboot. i was advised to use a different psu, and test that. i did and it was the psu, i tried the paperclip test as well and it turn on. but also try the voltages to your ram. it might be faulty ram too

I took my PSU to Anitec, and they were able to test it right away and tell me if it was faulty. I just bought a new one there to thank them.

If it's a new one, you should bring it back to the place where you bought it, they should be able to tell you if it's faulty.

clear the CMOS as well first.

Plug both of them in.

ok..i took the PSU to an older PC (Athlon X2, 3600, M2A-VM onboard graphic), and it boots up fine... :(

Soooooo.......does that mean the mobo or something else is fked? or it could still be the PSU? (btw, the older PC which boots up fine uses the extra 4-pin connectors instead of the 6-pin connectors)


Unfortunately I don't have another PSU to test the new computer atm.

Make sure the motherboard is mounted correctly.

how can the mobo be mounted incorrectly?
I just straight up screwed it to the case like I alway do.

check to make sure the memory is definitely put in properly. Try different slots, try just 1 stick at a time, and in different slots.

make sure there is power going into all the power slots for the MB (there are usually 2 places).

take your graphics card, and see if it outputs on the older pc.

Ok...i tired using another PSU on the new PC...same thing, no boot

Does that mean the problem is definitely in the motherboard?
I also tried upluggin the video card, HD, and ram.....still no power, no light. (does mobo still start up if I unplug all the add-on components? I know it won't boot, but will the PSU lights and fan turn on?)

I also checked and tested the pins to make sure the power switch is working...


damnnn...i already cut the UPC and send it in for rebate :(

Shouldn't matter. They'll just exchange the mobo and not the box. PSU and fan should still come on without video card, hdd, and ram.
