San Diego, CA --

Here's something you don't see everyday. A $50,000 Corvette winds up in the California surf, after a joyride that didn't end well.

When San Diego police arrived, the three people inside ran.

Lt. David Rohowits, San Diego Police Department: "For whatever reason, they decided to go off the road onto the sand. They did some doughnuts and some spins here in the hard sand. For some unknown reason, they ended up getting the vehicle into the water and abandoned the vehicle."

Police say they later found two of the occupants, a husband and wife, whom they suspected of being intoxicated. Police say the couple had rented the Corvette.

According to police, the couple allowed a man they had just met at a bar to take it for a spin. He is currently being sought.

How does this story in any way "cover their asses?"

I wonder if insurance will cover the inevitable rust. Yes, I know the car is mostly aluminum and fiberglass, but nuts & bolts will soon be falling off of this car with astounding persistence.

Depends on the insurance they had, but if they aren't driving, they aren't responsible.

Uhhhh....yes they are.

If the couple rented it, they're responsible no matter who they let drive it.

This car will be salvage titled - dismantle only for that reason. Most flood cars are branded parts only.

They are screwed insurance wise. They could however be spared a DWI charge though if the police believe that nonsense
