NetBook/Laptop help

Hey guys! I'm looking to buy a general purpose NETbook. It's gotta have an optical drive and SSD. Durability is also a big factor, as well as decent battery life.
my Max budget is $900

any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

alot of netbooks forgo the optical drive

Razor Ramon HG 10-19-2010 10:56 PM

Just buy an external DVD drive, and separate SSD. Off the top of my head, I can't even recall any netbooks or subnotebooks that come with SSDs unless you're talking about the ghetto SSDs that came with the first generation of netbooks..

$900 bucks for a netbook?

!MiKrofT 10-20-2010 03:32 AM

Why would you spend up to $900 on a netbook??

Acer 1830T or 1830TZ 11.6" and add your own SSD.

The optic drive is one of the features that will consumes your battery life. Unless you need it daily I would opt for an external. If you're just using it to load up stuff onto your book, you can use it at home when plugged in, or as needed.

Other wise you're looking at a small 12 - 13 inch lap top and your battery life won't be nearly as good.

How durable do you need it to be? They have some Toughbooks now but they're system speccs are pretty inferior to similarly priced, regular netbooks.

lol okok

i think i'm asking for too much out of a netbook

k let's change this up a little.

looking for a LAPTOP

but i would prefer it to be small
lightweight
excellent battery life
and durable

durability is key because of the different environments it will be used in..

plus i'm pretty butter fingers...
=(

You sir are looking for either a Dell or Asus.

Dell has optional warranty so up to you want to you 1 year with accidental or just 1 year warranty. And you can customize the system.

Asus is usually 2 yr warranty with 1 yr accidental...

Both brands are very reliable.

i kno the asus ul series (very netbook-like) don't come with an optical, not sure if they have an SSD option tho

RCMP uses panasonic toughbooks. At least it looks like it and someone from another forum mentioned it.

Although about 300 out of your budget w/o tax...it might be worth a looking into.

Heres a link to the site:

Ya.. I looked up the dell rugged notebooks... wayy out of budget. Other than thinkpads which are considerably less durable (IMO), they'll stand up to some drops and spillage. I wouldn't use them outdoors though.

Where is it being sold for 900 bucks? I checked apple.ca and the lowest (64GB SSD 11") model was $1049.

It's $999USD. I'm not in the market for one, but i think it's a great mobile computing device for business professionals.

It may be a bit too expensive and a bit of a halo product for the average consumer though. But it's a handsome product.

average consumer shouldn't even be using apple. to people that can afford it, a 2.3lbs all aluminum notebook for around a grand is a steal.

average ppl should be using cheap crap like acer, asus etc, the trade off is poorly made products that are heavy and provide great performance to price ratio.

!MiKrofT 10-21-2010 10:11 AM

Well the weight is about average. You're mainly paying for the unibody design. The processor is a CULV so you can't argue the price/performance ratio. But that being said it's a sexy ultraportable.

I dont know what it is as I loaded win 7 on mine but I heard this can be done... I'm sure google would answer this for you.
