Prelude Mugen Exhaust
 

Hello,

I recently picked up a complete Mugen exhaust for my 97 Prelude. Header, downpipe and cat-back exhaust with resonator.
I brought the whole thing to my mechanic and he told me I could reuse the gaskets that I got with it but I rather purchase some new ones. I rather be safe then sorry as I don't want any exhaust leaks.
I went to Garage Five, Lordco, Budget, Midas, Canadian Tire and even Honda but no dice. I don't know where else to go. No one has anything like this. Its either too small or too big.

Thanks. I already emailed kingmotorsports and every single other Mugen distributor around the globe. I even emailed Mugen sales in Japan. Hopefully someone has some kicking around as I'm sure its the same for many Mugen exhaust. I went to NAPA today as well but no dice.

that thread is kind of old, and dead. but considering its moderators who posted that, maybe they are still around, you can contact them via PMs.

lol yea I posted on every Prelude website I can think of. I'm pretty sure the whole world knows that I want some gaskets but no one has it! I might go down to Pep Boys but they're all the way in Everett and before I do ANY type of highway driving I need to get a bra for my car. I'm not risking my new paint getting ruined already.

Alright so Allen at Surrey Honda was the only one who helped so far. He called me back and informed me to speak with someone at Acura or who specializes in 98 Integra Type R's as they have the same exhaust gaskets as my Mugen and may be easier to get locally?
Can anyone confirm?

Reuse the gasket and coat it with high temp RTV silicone it always works and its what all shops do when a gasket is unavailable.

I asked a few people who have a Mugen exhaust on their Preludes and one guy told me just to use plain flat metal gaskets. It works and there are no exhaust leaks.

you can use the flat gaskets as well but if your originals are in decent shape the exhaust rtv and them will work just fine possibly better.

Does anyone have a JDM catalytic converter or know where to get one? I ran into a problem today during installation...

Gaskets are no longer an issue on this matter. I need a new catalytic converter that will work with this Mugen system somehow! The one I have is apparently too long. I need...

10.5inch cat between the two pipes or test pipe that has a O2 bung and I'm set but I still need the right flanges.

outlet 3 bolt equal space. About 2 or 2.1 inch in diameter on one side. Outlet flange 80mm bolt space.
Front inlet is offset triangle 2 closets are 69mm apart 1-3rd is 100mm apart.
2 1/4 front pipe.

That's all of the info my mechanic gave me I'm not 100% sure if I got it all right and if I remember it all but someone please help!

I basically just need the right flanges for my current catalytic converter then I can just cut whatever I need to on the cat and leave the Mugen untouched. Or perhaps a JDM cat if someone has it and if the measurements are the same.

Please let me know!

I just found this.... It looks like it'll fit. I'm not 100% sure as I don't have it in my hands but the measurements are just about right for the bolt spacing.
Its a JDM BB6 Cat. This all doesn't make sense to me as I thought JDM and USDM cats are all the same. Perhaps they changed it for BC, Canada? ICBC Aircare don't like JDM? :(

jdm cats are significantly shorter then most or all usdm cats. i believe this is due to a different regulation in aircare with the 2 countries. I was told once that you might not pass aircare with jdm cats, not sure though. good luck on your mugen exhaust man! cant wait to see it in action

Just finished installing it! JDM cat worked perfectly! Just needed to weld a new O2 bung as JDM cats don't have one. They have a overheating sensor instead. I hope I can still pass aircare. I damn well better!!!!
The exhaust sounds great. Fairly close to stock while driving just a bit of growl to it. Quiet at idle just like stock but once you step on it between 4000+ and engage VTEC it really opens up and purrs!
Is it my imagination or does the car seem faster? It seems like the RPM gauge and speedometer shoot up really quickly. Much quicker then stock... atleast so it seams. Either way I'm happy!! :) I already filmed alittle of it with my GoPro HD Motorsport Hero!

mugen header for the h22a was shown to gain roughly 10whp, and ~14whp after tune.
not sure about the exhaust ;p

Thank you! After tuning I know it'll increase a bit I forget how much exactly but I think you're right about the header PuYang. I read it somewhere on Honda-Tech I think.

Please keep in mind that I am not a professional or anything but I'm trying and learning as I go along.


I'm a bit disappointed as I am still unable to capture the best audio even from my recently Zoom H1 purchase. The exhaust was so great within the cabin of the car while driving but the recorder was unable to capture the same exhaust note as I hear in person. Its most likely my settings on the device and/or my settings within FCP but like I said I'm still learning. I'll post up the other video soon.
