Gay couple winners of $50M jackpot

Kurt Blanchette-Ebert quit his job at a small bakery Monday.

On Tuesday, the 63-year-old and his partner Claude, 52, became the country's newest millionaires when they claimed their $50 million Lotto Max jackpot prize in Vancouver.

"I put the ticket in the machine and it said $50 million," Kurt told media at the BC Lottery Corporation's office in Richmond. "The first thing I said was 'holy s---!'"

The modest couple was so shocked by their win on Friday, it took them a few days to work up the courage to cash in.

"Well, yesterday I had to quit my job," laughed Kurt. "I've never seen that side of my boss. He was laughing and rolling on the floor. Today was a good day (to claim)."

The first thing on the Blanchette-Ebert's list is a new house.

Then they've got a 30th anniversary to celebrate in December.

The couple has never been on vacation together and are eyeing Monaco as a destination.

But despite their new wealth, Kurt said he doesn't intend to change much.

"We'll still be the same people... I hope," he laughed.

Good for them!

Being gay's not a big deal right now, but they are celebrating their 30th anni, and being gay in the 1980s is a very big deal.

Um........... that's basically what I just said, no?

It should not be a big deal (as in, by today's standard)

They probably faced a lot of hardships (as in, over the years being persecuted by many for being gay).

If I had the fricken winning ticket, I would sandwich it between two pieces of acrylic, clamp the sucker together with security screws and weld the edges. Then I'd stick it in a locking steel box with foam cut to the shape of the acrylic. After that, I would stick the box in a locking bulletproof briefcase and handcuff it to my left wrist. Then I'd swallow the keys. After I get to the lottery headquarters in Richmond, I will take a shit into a pan to produce the keys.

J/K............ I'd just call the lottery headquarters and have them send a rep and a limo to come pick me up. Once you sign and fill out the back of the ticket, it's pretty hard for someone else to say it's theirs. I'd be more worried about people abducting a family member to get at the money.
