Can't connect to projector (TV)

Trying to connect my laptop via HDMI to my TV but it doesn't work. I thought it was the cable at first so I bought a new one and I plugged in and voila, it worked but it was set on "Extended Desktop" so I switched it to "Duplicate". Now it doesn't work at all even if I set it back to duplicate.

Updated to the latest video card drivers on laptop as well. Also tried plugging it into a different HDMI port on TV but to no avail.

The TV is detected but the settings don't do anything?! It worked before too until a few weeks ago when it stopped working out of the blue.

Laptop running Windows 7
TV is a Sony LCD

Any ideas?

Did you check that the imput for the TV was the same as the one you plugged in your laptop with?

^ Yup. Here's the latest update. Weird as hell.

I plug cable into the TV then the laptop, and the laptop makes that sound that tells you something's been connected. Ok, all's fine except that the TV's input isn't set onto the HDMI port that the laptop is connected to. I switch the input then to the port that the laptop is connected to. Then what do you know, when I switch it to that input, the laptop makes the DISCONNECT sound?! Wtf..

When you're on dupe displays, have you tried the usual resolutions?

800x600
1024x768
1280x720
1280x768
?
you could be feeding your TV a resolution thats out of it's range.
