UBC Sauder DAP vs Accounting Degree Hey all, just want to get some input. I finished my B.Sc Degree with a minor in commerce from UBC in May but want to get into the accounting field. I would like to eventually obtain a CA/CGA/CMA designation in the near future. My question is, what are the pros/cons of selecting the DAP program compared to completing a second degree. Obviously the length of the DAP program is much shorter, probably 1 year vs. 2-3 years for completing a second degree. Will obtaining a degree provide better job prospects? Does the DAP program actually fulfill all the requirements for CASB? ie. Would a grad from the DAP program be in the same position as a degree holder when starting CASB? or does the DAP grad have to take extra courses that were covered by the degree? Time is not a really big factor for me since I'm still quite young and since I have completed quite a few of the comm courses my course load would be lighter allowing me to still work. The extra time could also be beneficial since the economy will be in a better state. Also my work will provide partial tuition reimbursement on a per year basis so in the end the tuition will actually cost less for the degree than the DAP although starting a career will be postponed for that period of time. Finally, on the admissions page it states "Students who have a Business Degree or a degree with a significant number of business courses are not eligible for admission to the BCom program." Does anyone know if this applies to a minor in commerce? The minor in commerce classes are equivalents (Comm 329 = Comm 292, Comm 457=Comm 293 etc.) Are these considered part of my first degree? The minor was not required for my degree although they did satisfy my electives. I will be seeing an advisor soon but just wanted some feedback, maybe this thread will generate some more questions for the advisor. I will post the answers I get from the advisor later on. Thanks! |
Accounting firms are more likely to take DAP students because they are more mature. |
Take + Finish DAP, get a job, and register for CASB. TONS of people do this. There's a reason DAP is known as "BComm for those who wish they did BComm" :D |
Take the DAP. The opportunity cost is lower. When you finish DAP, you will have all the prerequisites needs to enter any accounting designation stream. Recruiting is not a problem as long as you keep your grades up and aren't a retard at the recruiting events. If anything, the extra degree gives you a leg up. |
