Mapping Network Drive Remotely Help
 

I have a home network, and a laptop. I want to use my laptop on the road and access my home network drive.

Is there a program out there which can do this?

Either build a VPN on your home network, or use a service like dropbox (This is what I use to sync files between my work desktop and laptop PC's, works great, don't need to carry a memory stick).

what i used to do before i bought an ASA was leave remote desktop enabled on my home server.

that way i could remote in and access whatever files/docs i wanted, and also use the remote desktop drive mapping to transfer files.

its somewhat insecure, but just make sure you change the remote desktop port to a non-standard one (stick to something 5000+). you can do that on the computer with a registry hack, which i never had any success with on 2008r2. or use your router to translate incoming port 5555 to outgoing port 3389 and forwarding to your computer.

and of course use a very strong password.

i have a hp server... i can connect to it remotely and use it as a file repository.

you can use remote softwares like remote administrator, vnc etc. i recommended remote administrator, true port forwarding for security. can have full control, send files, etc.

Remote Desktop is a good suggestion. It's like sitting in front of that machine. If you go that route, try something like LogMeIn (http://www.logmein.com). No IPs to memorize. Just login to the site, and then connect to your desktop.

Unless your internet connection has good upload speeds, transferring files from your home desktop to your remote location will be very slow.

i used dyndns.org, they have a lil app you can run on your server that automatically keeps a hostname resolving to your home IP. Great service, totally free too.

how is that different from windows remote desktop? aside from costing 50 bucks

I use teamviewer. Work for laptop and iphone/touch. Just install one on your pc and on your laptop. I use my itouch at work to access website on my home PC that require flash. Like those facebook game that require you to click it so and so every hours. But yeah connection play a major role in this kind of setup.
