Prof suspects I cheated?

Hi, yesterday our class had a quiz which is worth 1% of our grade. Near the end of the quiz, my friend beside me swore under his breath, causing me to look at him. The professor took both of our quizzes away and told us he saw us talking and looking at teach others papers. I didn't! And I don't think he would either. My professor is a really good guy and great professor, but I don't want to get in trouble for something I didn't do. I talked to my friend after class and the work we showed to get our answers are totally different. However, I used the wrong formula but yet got the right answer, will this cause him to be suspicious? I have a reasonable explanation of how I got the answer correct. Also, we had a midterm last week and I asked him how he did and everything we got were totally different. I've never cheated before in my life and don't have any reason to do so.I'm going to see him after class on Monday, I'm going to tell him exactly what happened and the truth. Does anybody have any idea how I can approach him and how else I can prove I didn't cheat?
Thank you so much!

PS: It's not the fact that it's 1%, but the fact that is the university suspends and kicks the student out and puts it on their academic records. I fully know the consequences of cheating, why would I do it? :(

it should be fine, if u had cheated in a mid-term/final then you would had to deal with a lot more, maybe needing to talk with a dean in your faculty to justify your case.

If the prof is nice as you mentioned, just tell him your justification for you not cheating and tell him you are willing to re-do a exam even if it means a lower grade.

talk to the prof, go SEE him in person and see waht he says. I'm sure he has seen all the excuses in the book so just go and talk to him and see waht he says.

Thanks everyone :) Is there anything else I can do or say to the professor to prove I didn't do it?

if you have previous assignment/test from him just bring it along. Again like you said it is worth 1%. By seeing the prof in person then at least he or she would get a better idea that you do care about your marks and will mostly give you sympathy.

if you have a tutorial class , tell your TA to talk with your prof about your class so the prof has a better idea of the type of student you are.

Hopefully you aren't those dom rebel/ed hardy looking guys. cause if you are, your chances probably will drop by 90%.

Thank you! Is there any other advice? I really don't want to get punished for something I didn't do =\

it's a quiz...they won't kick you out of school over it even if he doesn't buy your excuse.

dont sweat it

i remember like 5 years ago i was taking CMPT 120 i think.. on this one assignment like 80% of the people got caught cheating XD there's an appeal option anyways before they kick you out and thats through the dean..

i think you should be fine..

Thanks rice_demon, this was in Calculus class :p I used the mean value theorem to find the critical point(s) for an equation instead of using the derivative to find them.. Please help me anyone, I'd really appreciate it :)

update?

The prof said the quizzes weren't similar enough to pursue an investigation or anything. Very understanding guy and I told him why I would've seemed suspicious as well. He told me even if someone talked, never look at them and always look at my own paper. So glad he's an understanding prof, I was shitting bricks for 3 nights :(

was this at sfu?

if so, stories of this are still being told by profs up there lol

your money to the school is worth more than that 1% quiz.

yogenfruz 11-26-2010 12:13 PM

Likely what will happen, is the teacher will just give you a zero for the quiz and leave it at that, because it's just a quiz. Like others have said, had it been a midterm/final, you'd be looking at meeting with the dean of your school and stuff. Don't worry, I've seen it happen before and they just recieved a big red zero.

unxetas 12-03-2010 02:16 PM

I know I'm coming to this thread pretty late and all, but I gotta say.. If these were the worst 3 days of your life, you have no idea what's coming haha.

Like anything in life, man up to your mistakes, and don't take shit for mistakes you didn't do. That said, pick your battles carefully. You did the right thing, keep it up!
