| GTX 460 vs. Radeon 5850?
Hey guys,
My vid card (9800GTX) packed it in today. So I guess I need a new vid card. I think I've narrowed it down to two cards which are both around the same price. Spec wise they both look similar. I don't plan on overclocking.
GeForce GTX 460 or Radeon 5850? Looking at the 1 gig models.

6850, you mean?
I'd pick whichever is cheaper. Performance is quite close between the two.

the 5850 is within the same price range as the 6850 so I would go with 6850
But if I had an SLI mobo I wouldn't mind grabbing the 460 when they drop down to $140 soon.

isn't the 5850 & 5870 still ati's most powerful card even compared to the new 6 series...(6850/6870)? I though 460's performance is substantially lower than 5850..a more competitive card would be 480. From my understanding the high end 6 series card won't be out in a while so the 5850 are still going to pricey.

the 5870 is still king of the hill right now in the $300 range but the 6870 is already giving the 5870 a run for its money and so is the 6850 to the 5850. the 6800 series consuming less power, producing less heat, having some newer features, and the 6850 having nice headroom for OC or factory OC. I'm assuming that once the 6900 series comes out next month all of the cards below it will drop a bit in price. especially the 5770 which might even reach the $100 range or below as a result.

6900 is different level, it will compete with GTX 580, it should be close to $400 for the cheapest 6900
As I read unless nvidia come out with some new cards, which is unlikely, price will stay the same, but look out for NCix MIR or IMIR Posted via RS Mobile | |

why would they name the new card the same performance code when it is even slower than the last gen. card??
When we went from 3850 to 4850 to 5850, there has always been a HUGE performance gain going from one generation to the next in the same performance code.
but this time they decided to make it slower...? 
They new 6850 and 6870 should've been named to 6670 and 6770 to keep the name & performance consistent. (except ATI probably doesn't wanna do that because naming it 6850/6870 will sell better)
Btw...5850 is 1-2 class higher than GTX460...so maybe you should compare something in the same group.

Plus one of the things people often overlook is that the NVidia cards do onboard PhysX acceleration, which can make a BIG difference on some games.

And if you do video editing having CUDA helps too. I'm a little ticked off about that.

If I didn't get one of my 5770's for free, I would have gone 460 because:
A) They scale better in SLI vs AMD cards in crossfire
B) Onboard PhysX
C) CUDA

| Yeah. If I hadn't got my 4890 at Boxing Day ($179.99 back when it kicked ass? Hell yes.) I would've gotten a GTX260.
Right now my 4890 sounds like it's about to die (fan sensor went wonky, so set manually via ATI CCC when I enter games) so I might RMA that back to XFX and pick up a GTX460. And then put the 4890 in my brother's computer (still running 8800GT).

There are also many "variant" of GTX460, which the price/performance could differ by more than 20%... (I got a EVGA GTX460 768MB a few months ago for $159 when 5850 were selling at $250, and most other GTX460 1024MB/OC/superclocked/etc were selling at $200-$240)
In terms of features, ATI also has:
- Eyefinity
- MLAA
- Displayport
- Better power efficiency
so it is hard to say one is better than the other in terms of features...
