Antimatter containment now a reality

VANCOUVER — Science fiction has become science fact after a group of researchers devised a way to hang on to antimatter, which gleeful experts say could unlock one of the mysteries of the universe.

About 15 Canadian experts from Simon Fraser University, the University of B.C., the University of Calgary, York University and the TRIUMF national research lab were part of the 40-person international team to make the discovery in Geneva.

Scientists have been creating antimatter for 15 years, but it moves at about the speed of light and is quickly destroyed.

Now this group has devised a type of magnetic bottle that is able to hold the antimatter for about one-tenth of a second, giving them a way to study the anti-atom.

Marcello Pavan, a physicist with TRIUMF, calls the device amazing and says it could give some insight into what happened after the Big Bang created the universe.

Pavan says the discovery gives scientists the tools to possibly solve the question of why all the antimatter disappeared after the big bang, leaving nothing but matter to create the universe.
A BIG BIG STEP....

Now I can go into the lab and yell "CAPTAIN, ANTI-MATTER CONTAINMENT FIELD IS COLLAPSING - HULL BREACH IN 30 SECONDS"

GabAlmighty 11-17-2010 02:43 PM

So.... What's it look like?

You know Lt Geordi La Forge has got this shit on lock! No need to worry...

And wow a 1/3 of the CERN team is Canadian, I'm very proud of my fellow Canadians for repping hard!

Let's just hope that some of Gene Roddenberry's other predictions come true - like the abandonment of religion by humans. Only then will we have a chance at world peace.

Next they need to work on the Heisenberg Compensator.....

Berz out.

people will just find another excuse they always do; its not like atheists are peaceful

If we devoted as much time and money and effort into science as much as we do religion now, imagine the possibilities.

optiblue 11-17-2010 06:57 PM

That's pretty cool~

In other news, the Pope shat bricks in Vatican City.

Hondaracer 11-17-2010 08:47 PM

CERN > Religion

so this lets them get a glimpse at Anti-matter, whereas the LHC recreates the situation in which antimatter is produced?

Hitting the thanks button doesn't convey my respect for these two posts, couldn't have been more well put.

Then I say.... "See what you can do to it... Divert auxiliary power to anti-matter containment. Evacuate the Engineering deck except for all essential personnel" :D

Greed and lust for wealth and power won't any negative effect on peace once religion is abolished.
