Highway Rock Chips Windshield.

I was on the highway today and i let this big truck cut in front of me cuz he signaled... Well i wish i never did... I stayed behind him, bad mistake, a rock came flying into my windshield right at my face... Now i got what looks to be a half inch crack or chip... Whats the deal with this.. Is it the truckers fault? Obviously he didnt mean to do it but damn... Would i have to pay 300 deductable to get it fixed? Or is the trucker at fault? I was just looking at other small rock dents on my windshield the other day.. Well now i got a big chip in my windshield right in front of the driver

You would need to get the plate of the truck and record the time and place of the incident.

Berz out.

if you have windshield coverage, speedy autoglass fixes for free
no deductable, no increased premiums, and they will come to your home to fix it

doesn't matter about license plate if you have windshield coverage since they are going to do it for free (if your paying extra for coverage, which I doubt since you don't know if you have it or not)

if you don't I think glass claims are $200 deductible(at least for me)

You are right, the truck is responsible. The trouble now is trying to convince ICBC of that fact. I know, I've tried. Some clown blew by me at 80 in the 50 zone where seal coating was being done. He threw gravel all over my vehicle breaking the windshield and marking the paint. I got the plate number too.

I went to ICBC to make a claim. They took photos and a statement, then called the other guy up for his side. He told them no way, my vehicle was never there at that time.

The bottom line? They told me if I wanted a new windshield to pay my deductible like everyone else and get one.

Do you wonder why I have never purchased any coverage other than what I had to from ICBC ever since then?

Do you have extra coverage from other private insurance companies?

ICBC's basic coverage doesn't help at all

After all the money you raised for them that's no way to treat you.
This is why people need to have little cameras mounted in their cars.

First thing you should do is take it to a glass shop ASAP to find out if the chip can be repaired - if so, it will be cheaper to do that than to replace the whole windshield, and if it IS repairable, ICBC will deny a glass replacement claim anyway. It's important to do it quickly, though, as the cracks will start to spread and it will have to be replaced after that (it will happen faster with this weather, too - water gets in and freezes and it will crack like crazy).

If it does need to be replaced, your basic comprehensive insurance should cover that with a $200 deductible if it's caused by a road hazard.

And if you do end up needing the glass replaced, remember that you won't get a factory piece, it will be aftermarket. So if this is important to you, arrange with the glass shop before they order it. You'll have to pay extra.

^Sorta depends. When our Accord got broken into and the driver's window smashed, ICBC told us it would take a couple extra days before we could bring it in to get fixed, because they had to custom-order the factory-smoked glass.

Yes, we've used Royal/Sun Alliance and Family. The former treated us very well on a claim.

Aftermarket windshield are usually thinner than the factory ones. I have seen on a few cases with caddilac cts with the direct injection engine that has a mechanical fuel pump, you can hear the sound of the fuel pump going tick tick tick with an after market windsheild cause it is thinner. Audi's might be the same too since they also have a mechanical fuel pump for their direct injection cars.

you would be at fault as you might be following too closely behind for the rock to hit you

I've been hit with rocks from a truck 100' in front of me. They can fling at all different angles off tires, and bounce up off the road.

Similar question, not really worth its own thread.

I hit a raccoon last week, now I have a large paint chip on my bumper, will ICBC cover it or would I be at fault somehow?
If they do cover the claim, will they paint the whole bumper?

Could be that no 3rd party supplier made glass for that car?

I was never aware of an OEM replacement coverage for the windshield. I should look into that because I'm getting tire of spending $150 more than my deductible each time.

The adjuster said that because the other windows had factory smoke, they'd have to match it to maintain the car's value. *shrug*

Interesting.

Using the "car's value" argument I could make my case for a factory windshield. The one they stuck on there the first time had a very pale tint strip and was warped all over. Trees in the distance did the funky funhouse mirror thing.

Needless to say it came off the next week

ICBC's full of shit. The dealership I work at right now has a car that's got a water leak from a non-factory windshield. ICBC cheaped out, and now we're stuck with a car that's got 5 hours of water leak repair, and now also needs a $2000 module due to the water leak, all because they wouldn't fix it with the factory seal and windshield.

ICBC just goes "well too bad".

Thieves. All of them.

This is the exact scenario I try to avoid because of how many incidences I see from this at work.

I stay away from big trucks as much as I do from middle-aged female drivers/gramps and grannies.

I'm in a similar situation. I have a dent and paint chip from a rock hitting my hood. How much will icbc charge me for that?

Just reminded me - the moulding for the aftermarket glass didn't sit right either. Good thing I had them replace it again.
