| BA in Economics?
Hi, I'm currently a first year student at UBC and thinking of pursuing a bachelors degree in Economics. Does anybody have any insight,tips, and/or opinions on this? Thank you so much!  What kind of jobs would I be able to have in the future and how respected is UBC's economics degree?
PS- I have already looked at many sites. However, most of them were not informative/B.Sc. in economics  |

I'm doing the Economics and Mathematics Combined right now (also at UBC, graduating in April)
Nothing to complain about - study hard and you'll get it
as for jobs, you will probably be working at a bank somewhere as an account manager, though I have heard cases where some BA.Econ students eventually go onto becoming full blown investment bankers
as for how "Respected" UBC's degree is... UBC is a fully accredited and well-known University in Canada. Unless you are putting yourself up to someone who graduated from say... the Ivy League schools, you should be playing on an even level

Thanks Captain Picard, very helpful =) What do you see yourself doing in the future as a career and if you don't mind me asking.. why did you choose to pick econ?

BA Econ doesn't mean much. 99% of entry economist jobs are in the government and they require a graduate degree.
Other jobs in the bank will take anyone with a degree in practically any discipline, or college diploma. Posted via RS Mobile | |

if you dont have any work experience in your field, then you will be at a huge disadvantage when competing with a BBA student in econ..
but if you are well rounded with work/volunteer and school grades, im sure you will be hired by a respected company.
my friend had a BA in econ from SFU, he had a stacked resume and got hired by HSBC in HK right after graduation.

While HSBC in HK might be a good company to work for... HSBC Canada is not very rewarding compared to other Canadian banks.

A) A commercial pilot
B) Air Traffic Control
which coincidentally, both only mostly require High School diplomas

Thanks everyone! Is it possible to become a investment banking/analyst or financial manager after some extremely hard work and possibly a BA with years of experience or a MA?

you need to build up your resume, gain extensive soft skills, and whore yourself to the industry network.
things that you can do are attending those networking conferences. while 9 out of 10 people are worthless, but sometimes you may find a key contact to a particular job or field.
