Pentium D vs Core 2 Duo vs i3,5,7

So I'm in the market for another laptop now.. and it's been a LONG while since I've read up anything about computers... I actually can't believe how much it's changed since I've last looked for a laptop

Anyway, I'm currently running a 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo (bought around 2.5-3 years ago). I'm obviously looking for something faster now.

I am just wondering what kind of i3,5,7 I would need to run my programs faster? Or if someone could provide an 'equivalency' chart for all the types of processor speeds out there.. for example (grabbed this off... canyourunit.com)

Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHz (3.2 GHz for Vista) or faster
equivalent to Intel Core 2.0 GHz (2.2 GHz for Vista) or faster.

(So... that makes me think the P4 2.8 Ghz = Core 2.0 Ghz) let me know if this thinking is wrong..

Coles:
What I'm really looking for is just an equivalency chart!

Thanks!

Think of it this way
i3 is the lowest level of cpu then is i5 and then is i7. Usually i5 is decent enough.

Look at http://www.cpubenchmark.net/
Looks like the I3 will even be faster than what you have right now. You will also have more and faster ram on your new laptop.
