Putting A Dog Down

I may have to put my dog down in the near future since shes pretty old, having a hard time walking and doesnt seem to have a spark for life anymore. However shes quite large and i would have a lot of difficulty getting her into my car. Does anyone know of any animal hospital that has a mobile service that would be able to perform the procedure at my house and take her away ? Thanks.

I would suggest checking with your vet. Some will make house calls for situations such as yours.

My condolences. I'm very sorry to hear that she's not doing well, your making a very noble decision.

Agreed - and if your vet doesn't do it, he/she should know one who will.

Edit: following is the Pet's Ten Commandments. Pay particular note to #10.

Quote:

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.

4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.

5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.

9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.

10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

There are a few doctors who will come do it at your house. Your vet may be one of them. You should contact him and if he isn't you can get a referral from him usually.

JP,

I'm in the same boat right now. My 13 year old Rotty is only a shell of her former self. I miss her going crazy when I had my keys in the front door because now she just lies on her mat, crying. She can no longer bug me and try to jump up on the couch because she can barely walk.

I'm in a struggle between her pain and my selfish want to keep my dog.

If you need some help, let me know. If I'm available, I can pick her up and drop her off and you can follow me in your car. I just need a bit of a heads up since I'm in Coquitlam.

Putting down dogs sucks, but at least you'd be doing it for a good reason.

My first dog when I was a kid (a german shepherd) was about 13 years old when it got sick, and we could tell it was on its way out. Literally the day we decided to take it to be put down, we found it passed away in the back yard. :(

The next dog we got was a german shepherd/doberman cross that turned agressive and unpredictable and my dad decided to put it down, it was only 2 years old. That really pissed me off.

I've been pretty lucky so far. My "puppy" is turning 12 this year and is still relatively healthy (had surgery to remove kidney stone last year and came out good as new). He takes more naps than he used to, but during playtime and walks, he's still as perky as he ever was (people are still asking how old my puppy is when I take him for walks and are surprised when I tell them he's turning 12 :) ). I'm dreading the day I will have to consider putting him down...my wife is telling me to start preparing myself mentally for it now, lol
