Motomochi and Kintaro are one of the best, IMO. (Then again, opinions are invalid apparently?)

When Santouka first opened there use to be line-ups (First week or two). Now that everyone has discovered there's nothing great about it I see no one lining up and not many customers throughout the day.

Dinehere.com even has mixed reviews about it.

IMHO.

YMMV.

I've had to wait at Santouka countless times ever since it opened, even until now. You may pass by it and miss the lineup since they usually fit a few of the groups waiting to be seated inside.

Then again, the volume of customer traffic and dinehere.ca reviews aren't exactly the best way to determine the caliber of a restaurant... :)

I can't wait to try Sanpachi...

Santouka is still by far my favourite... you may think there isn't a line up b/c you can squeeze maybe 6 people in the front entrance with the door closed... compared to kintaro's small entrance way..

Typically they have four or so people sitting inside on the bench, and another five or so in the entryway. Might as well wait inside since it's cold right :)

Either or, I don't think it tastes all that great and there are people on this board who agree clearly. But there are also people who disagree.

That's that. I'll stick with Motomachi.

Who actually makes their own noodles in house these days anyways?

i believe kintaro does or purchases from someone who does make them

the reason they closed their richmond location was because everyday someone had to commute the noodles out there, if they were pre-made this would not have been an issue

but as numerous others have stated many taiwanese or shanghai places make their own noodles

yeah i guess you're right.. most the ones i tried had fat globules floating in the soup.. kintaro is missing something flavour wise though.. theres a chain called kamakura in japan.. it has that posh taste..

i wanna try this so bad..

apparently there are always 30 minute waits.. the noodles look so think and the soup looks amazing

the best ramen shops in japan are the ones are family owned and looks like shit shacks. i went to numerous random ramen places in kyoto and tokyo and they were great. especially when the broth is soaked into the meat bones!

so i went to try it today.. now that ive tasted it you cant really compare it to kintaro and santouka because the style of ramen is different. if you were to compare you would probably compare it to Ezogiku ramen near the vancouver central library.

the soup is not the thick fatty soup like the other places.. and even the way of tasting is different.

the first thing i noticed was the bowl seemed kinda small.. but was a wrong.. as you can see in the pictures they pack that shit tight as hell.. unlike kintaro and such they ass alot of onions, beat sprouts and other vegetables.. the more you eat.. the more you find it seems..

the soup doesnt give you that creaminess that pig fat gives.. instead you get a strong earthy miso (i had miso ramen) taste right at the back of your throat when you swallow.

the noodles were not soft but they weren't very springy either..

meat was nothing special either, it was okay.. (thinly sliced)

overall i actually wouldnt mind going back even though the prices were a little more expensive ($9-$11).. for the money im more full because im not filled up on fat from the soup.. there is actually alot of food in that small bowl : D

Went there today with 2 friends. Much like onaki's experience, ours much very much the same.

We found that they use a lot of filler - siu choy, bean sprouts and other veggies. All 3 of us enjoyed the noodles as they are cooked al dente so mind you, this is a personal preference. I wish they had more noodles but again, too much crappy filler.

The meat is marginally okay at best. I prefer the meats from Santouka instead. Egg was not sliced in half. Not sure why. Service was good and the atmosphere/environment is different in a way where its a lot more comfortable and welcoming. You aren't rushed whatsoever.

A majority of their menu is not available at the moment so it's ramen and several other little things. They serve alcohol. I've rate this place a 6/10 for now but they may need some time to tweak things since they opened several weeks ago.
